The six tracks on this album were recorded during the same session as Julian Lage’s previous album View With A Room, and they feature the same prestigious line-up (bassist Jorge Roeder, drummer Dave King and Bill Frisell on guitar). With this new release, Julian delivers an intimate and thoughtful coda to what is quickly becoming a milestone in his young career. The album outlines and projects the various paths that the quartet’s music could take in the future, should he decide to continue on this adventure. He performs as part of a quartet in the electric arrangement in View With A Room (see Everything Helps, Mantra and above all the mysterious and dreamy Missing Voices - undoubtedly the most bewitching track on the album). Here, Lage also explores the more acoustic side of his music - in a quartet (The Layers), but also in a duet with his bass player (Double SouthPaw), and in a duet with Frisell (This World). Through this series of imaginary landscapes, deeply rooted in the American psyche, yet at the edges of Americana and modern jazz, Lage exposes perhaps his most personal ideas to date. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
