Pete Townshend revisitou o conceito de ópera rock com outro grande álbum duplo, desta vez construído em torno da história de um jovem mod lutando para amadurecer no meio dos anos 60. Se algo, este foi um projeto mais ambicioso do que Tommy, com um peso adicional devido ao fato de o The Who não estar criando uma fantasia, mas reexaminando as raízes de seu próprio nascimento na cultura mod. No final das contas, pode ter havido um peso excessivo, já que Townshend tentou combinar a história de um mod confuso chamado Jimmy com a análise de uma personalidade dividida em quatro partes (daí o título Quadrophenia), destinada a refletir as quatro personalidades conflitantes que trabalham dentro do The Who.
