While they've had no trouble building a loyal, ever growing fan base over the course of a career that's nearly twenty years old, this Washington D.C. band has often had trouble overcoming a sense of scepticism from the public, spearheaded by specialist publications. Often labelled as “Djent” (a name originally coined to describe music composed by Meshuggah, masters of the genre), Periphery has also faced criticism that the melodic approach of its singer Spencer Sotelo tended to lean too far to the soppy side of the genre, as do many so-called metalcore bands.
However, the band’s motto is proclaimed loud and clear on its album V: Djent Is Not A Genre. In short, it fights back against labels and their conventions. The fight is embodied in this very dense record, sometimes impenetrably so, but which inarguably takes it beyond many stylistic boundaries. It does this at the risk of getting muddled up, trying to force entire universes, somewhat heavy-handedly, to cohabit within the same track. It's as daring as it is loaded.
Meticulously composed over the course of the first lockdown in 2020, this album is above all a progressive metal album that borrows as much from djent (very prominent in “Zagreus”’s tremendous kickoff) as it does from the eighties electronic sound of Silhouette. Although both the choruses and the slower songs are flooded with vocal melodies, as soon as Periphery launches into solid riffs, their sheer violence and power expand beyond anything we very rarely see, screams included. For a genre that begins at the limits, this is only possible with a fair amount of ingenuity. A work highlighted by a production fronted by a wall of guitars (Periphery has three guitarists), to be faced in full on the 12 minute track “Dracul Gras”. Ambitious, powerful, complex, Periphery V is both a cross-cutting journey back to the best moments of the band's career and a record that pushes the limits a little further with each song. Periphery continues to move forward as a truly unstoppable force. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
