Este quinto álbum é surpreendentemente denso, tanto em conteúdo quanto em forma. Mostra a elevada espiritualidade de seu autor, uma complexidade americana, mais uma vez, o que significa ser negro e icônico nos Estados Unidos. A produção, profundamente infundida com o som do Sounwave, é arrojada, versátil, certamente mais complexa e experimental do que em seus álbuns anteriores. O californiano decidiu expressar os humores pessoais que explorou em DAMN. e vinculá-los à história sombria dos Estados Unidos em To Pimp A Butterfly.
