Recording under her first and middle name, singer and songwriter salem ilese debuted her dissatisfied, relationship-themed dance-pop on the EP 757 in 2019. A year later, her breakout track, "Mad at Disney," took off on social media on its way to the international pop charts. She released music at a steady clip thereafter, including a remix of her song "PS5" with TOMORROW X TOGETHER featuring Alan Walker that was streamed over a 100 million times in 2022. Her debut album, high concept, arrived the following year. A singer for as long as she can remember, Los Angeles' Salem Ilese Davern enrolled in her first songwriting class at the age of ten and worked at honing her skills over the next decade, including a stint at the Berklee College of Music. One of her first releases, 2018's "Impatient," got its own remix EP in 2019, and that June, the song also appeared on her debut EP, 757. In July 2020, salem ilese issued "Mad at Disney," a song she co-wrote with Bendik Møller and Jason Hahs that was prompted by a pair of Disney live-action versions of animated classics in 2019. With production by Møller and Hahs, the track went viral on social media a month later, and by mid-September "Mad at Disney" was being streamed over a million times a day, eventually reaching the Top 50 in places like Australia, Norway, and Ireland. It peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. She followed up with "Coke & Mentos" and "Marry Christmas" before the end of the year. She followed that with a busy 2021 that included the Alan Walker collaboration "Fake a Smile" and second EP (L)only Child, which arrived on Homemade Projects/10K Projects that May. A duet with Jamie Miller, "Here's Your Perfect," appeared on Atlantic a few months later, and salem ilese turned again to product brands for that year's "Ben & Jerry" and "Hey Siri" before her song "Intuition" appeared on the soundtrack to the animated series Blade Runner Black Lotus. The singer had her biggest streaming hit since "Mad at Disney" with mid-2022's "PS5," specifically a remix version with TOMORROW X TOGETHER featuring Alan Walker. The year 2022 brought "Married to Your Melody" with Imanbek and "Crypto Boy," which was one of several of the previously mentioned songs to appear on an expanded version of the 2022 collection Unsponsored Content that October. Not done yet, she released the Secret Santa holiday EP as well as a "Mad at SCOTUS Version" of "Mad at Disney" before the year's end. In the meantime, she earned songwriter credits on material for other artists, including songs recorded by Demi Lovato ("Holy Fvck"), Pussy Riot ("Princess Charming"), and Taeyeon ("Toddler"). "Howling at the Moon," a duet between salem ilese and Mike Posner, followed in February 2023, just before she issued a series of songs leading up to the 10K Projects release of her first album, September 2023's high concept. Its team of charting producers included the Band Camino's Spencer Stewart.
