In the Beginning (A Live Anthology) is a budget-priced collection that culls highlights from live tapes recorded over the course of the Slits' career, from their 1977 tour to their final show in 1981. There are a couple of intense, noisy exciting moments, but the quality of the disc is wildly uneven. Several cuts are simply out of control, without any focal point to make listening worthwhile, while the sound of the album is poor. For fans that want a historical document of the Slits in concert, there are enough worthwhile moments, but only diehards will have the patience to sit through the record.
