Morphing Chamber Orchestra

The Morphing Chamber Orchestra is a young group that lives up to its name, shifting personnel according to the wide variety of repertory it plays. In music for larger ensembles, it has also been known as the Vienna Morphing Orchestra. The Morphing Chamber Orchestra was formed in 2006 by violinist, violist, and arranger Tomasz Wabnic, who remains the group's artistic director. The orchestra's members are predominantly young; they came to Vienna to study, and they bring a variety of approaches to the group. At the beginning, the Morphing Chamber Orchestra focused on the Viennese Classical style, but the group quickly branched out beyond that style into Baroque music, Romantic opera, film music, pop and jazz, and even world music; the orchestra collaborated with oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros. In 2010, the Morphing Chamber Orchestra made its recording debut on the Gramola label, backing soprano Akiko Nakajima on the album Wien, Stadt meiner Träume. The ability to handle flexibility in programming has been a desideratum for musicians who join the Morphing Chamber Orchestra, and indeed, the ensemble's collaborators have been an unusually varied group. They have included tenor Roberto Alagna, soprano Aleksandra Kurzak (with whom the orchestra recorded the album Desire), countertenor Andreas Scholl, jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin, and composer Arvo Pärt. The orchestra has toured widely, not only in central Europe but as far afield as South Korea, where it appeared on an opera tour. The group has had a strong online presence; during the COVID-19 pandemic, a quintet of the orchestra's players backed online offerings from New York's Metropolitan Opera. The Morphing Chamber Orchestra has released several albums on the Aparte label, including Mozart Concertante (2021) and an album of Arvo Pärt's works in 2022. The orchestra owns rights to world premieres of compositions from the archives of the 700-year-old Jasna Góra Monastery in Poland.
