Magdalena Hoffmann

Magdalena Hoffmann is the principal harpist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. She is active as a soloist and chamber musician, designing her concert programs around expanding the instrument's repertoire. Signing an exclusive recording contract with the Deutsche Grammophon label in 2021, Hoffmann issued her first album there, Nightscapes for Harp, the following year. Hoffmann was born in 1990 in Basel, Switzerland. She began to play the harp at age six, and in 2007, she went on to study in Düsseldorf, Germany with Fabiana Trani. After graduating from the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf where she continued her studies with Trani, Hoffmann attended the Royal Academy of Music in London for a year, studying with Skaila Kanga. From there, she had post-graduate studies with Cristina Bianchi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. Additional private lessons and master classes with harpists such as Fabrice Pierre, Isabelle Moretti, and Alice Giles, among others, helped round out her education. 2014 was an important year for Hoffmann: she debuted her theatrical concert work, Odyssey on 47 strings, at the Swiss Harp Masters Festival and became principal harpist with the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra in Austria. The following year, she began teaching at the Tyrol State Conservatory. Hoffmann has collaborated in chamber music with flutists Karl-Heinz Schütz and Andrea Lieberknecht, and violinist Aleksey Igudesman (to whose children's album Funny Animals she contributed drawings and text). She earned two special prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in 2016 after advancing to the semi-final round. In 2018, Hoffmann left her position with the Tyrolean Symphony when she was appointed principal harpist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony. That year, she also released her debut album, Footnotes, on the Izhcailuma Records label. Signed to the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label in 2021, Hoffmann issued Nightscapes for Harp, her debut album for that label, in 2022. Hoffmann is cultural ambassador for Colombia's Casa Hogar organization, which provides housing and education for girls in the country's troubled Chocó region.
