Kollektiv Turmstrasse

German techno act Kollektiv Turmstrasse makes intricately designed, melodic dance music, adventurously incoporating an ever-widening palette of influences. Originally a duo consisting of Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher, Turmstrasse emerged during the 2000s, creating twitchy tech-house and minimal techno which was mysterious, inventive, and a bit melancholy. Tracks such as "Tristesse" (2007) and "Luechtoorn" (2009) established the duo's popularity among clubgoers, particularly in their native country. They explored downtempo and IDM on their acclaimed 2010 full-length Rebellion Der Traümer and continued scoring club hits like 2015's playful "Sorry I Am Late." Eventually, Turmstrasse became a solo endeavor of Plagemann, and he began producing brighter, more accessible, and even anthemic material such as the 2022 single "YAP." The 2023 full-length Unity of Opposites draws from indie dance, pop, house, and poetry. Based in Hamburg, Nico Plagemann and Christian Hilscher began making music together in 1998. Their earliest tracks appeared on 12" EPs and digital releases, with netlabel No Response releasing the dub techno EP New Weakness in 2004, and full-length Verrückte Welt appearing in 2006. Vinyl singles then appeared on labels like Ostwind Records, Diynamic Music, and Connaisseur Recordings. 2006 EP Disconnect Me (featuring the track "Melodrama") and 2007's "Tristesse" became some of their first club hits, with 2008's "Mondscheinprimaten" and 2009's lush, atmospheric "Luechtoorn" also making an impact. Rebellion Der Traümer, a 2010 album released by Connaisseur, largely departed from dance music, mainly focusing on downtempo tracks and ambient interludes. Rebellion Der Träumer - Remix Collection followed in 2012, and a digital compilation of Turmstrasse's singles for Musik Gewinnt Freunde appeared in 2013. The Sry I'm Late EP, featuring the Black Rob-sampling "Sorry I Am Late," was released by Diynamic in 2015. Returning to minimal, ambient techno, Ribbon Reef appeared on Musik Gewinnt Freunde in 2019. Hilscher left Kollektiv Turmstrasse, and Plagemann kept the project name as he continued producing and performing solo. He launched an event series titled YAP (You Are Perfect), and the 2022 EP YAP was the first release on Not Sorry Music. Remixes of the EP's Brandy-sampling title track followed, and the 2023 single "Night Wire" pushed Turmstrasse's sound in a more anthemic direction. Full-length Unity of Opposites includes guest vocals by Joel Stewart and Tien Viet Nguyen, as well as excerpts from Rainer Marie Rilke poems.
