Chuck Berry understood from the first what an electric guitar could mean to rock & roll, and blessed with a street poet's way with words, he remade R&B over in his own image, creating rock & roll and guitar slinging all in one swoop with these wonderful mid-'50s sides. Included in this succinct 14-track set are the first rounds of the rock & roll explosion, and songs like the wry and joyous "Roll Over Beethoven," "Too Much Monkey Business," the funky, percolating "Maybellene," the sly "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," and the gorgeous "Havana Moon" are classics in every sense of the word.
