If anyone’s going to lull you into their dream world, it’s Lykke Li, and she’s not the kind of person who dreams the same dream twice. After experimenting with alternative folk (Wounded Rhymes in 2011) and electro pop (So Sad, So Sexy in 2018), the Swedish singer-songwriter appears to have reinvented herself yet again, releasing a concept album that focuses on reflections on love. Recorded in her bedroom in Los Angeles with help from her friend Björn Yttling, the album addresses all the emotions associated with the subject matter: from passion and desire to attachment and rejection. However, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is all just a pretext for Lykke Li to do what she does best: bringing fantasy and reality dangerously close together. Whether her songs draw their inspiration from film as an art form (5D, ü&i) or fairgrounds (Carousel), the artist’s signature dreamy sound constantly collides with flawed reality. This cat-and-mouse game between artificial wellbeing and painful reality is particularly evident in Happy Hurts, a track that flits between reassurance and anxiety. Highway To Your Heart is about hard-hitting truth, with morose lyrics such as: “Get high, but it won’t last – I’m still alone”. With her latest concept album, Lykke Li reinvents herself whilst paradoxically staying exactly the same. This neurasthenic, ghostly music gives listeners an insight into her tormented and melancholic world. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
