One radio, two rooms, each with a distinct ambiance. Cleveland Calling Pt. 2 is the flip side of Rory Gallagher’s 1972 performance for American radio WNCR. While the first volume sounded like a radio show, with acoustic solos and intimate chats between songs, this feels a lot more like a concert. Gallagher picked up his electric guitar, grabbed his bandmates and set to playing in an empty room. Despites the emptiness, he played as if he were performing to a crowd. The set is short (only seven pieces), yet it’s still a generous offering that perfectly encapsulates the musical palette of the Irish guitarist: rocky blues (Used To Be, Laundromat), bluesy rock (Should’ve Learnt My Lesson, In Your Town), complete with acoustic folk-blues (Pistol Slapper Blues, Banker Blues). The record feels raw, every track burning with passion and sprinkled with adrenaline. Nothing feels superfluous or egocentric; he’s here to serve music and get your body moving. Since 1972, Rory Gallagher spent his life on tour. His epic version of In Your Town is just one example of why his lengthy career is so deserved. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
