Dan and Pat have been writing the handbook for rock’n’roll for 20 years. A decade after leaving their hometown Akron in Ohio for Nashville, the Black Keys produced Let’s Rock, a sort of return to the roots of original classic rock that paid homage to the electric guitar from the very first minute to the very last. Today they're back with Delta Kream, this Blues Rock album is the perfect opportunity to look back on the American duo's rocking guitar career.

The Black Keys in 10 Songs
by Marc Zisman
From 2001, The Black Keys have been reminding the world about the real roots of the Blues, cutting away all the frills and unnecessary solos. Their music has always been untamed, abrupt and minimalist. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney developed this unique style over the course of two decades, without once selling their souls to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads. Here are ten songs to prove it.
Although there were only two of them, The Black Keys now had the whole world at their feet. Thanks to Brothers, their life as an indie act was a distant memory, and the stadiums beckoned. But this period was a turbulent one in terms of the two men's relationship. Auerbach released his first solo album without ever really warning Carney, who was dealing with a divorce. But put the record on and you’ll find that the gumbo they have cooked up has lost none of its authentic flavour or ingredients. Howlin' for You is a great illustration of this precarious bridge between calculation and values, maturity and professionalism, where Auerbach and Carney built their partnership and laid the foundations for their full-frontal Blues sound. The beat is taken from Gary Glitter's Rock & Roll and boosted by a beastly, ultra-saturated bass. With this song, which sounds like a cover, the duo take canonical Blues to another planet. The fuzzy sound and Auerbach's jovial voice bring real originality to a track that could have been a snooze-fest. The Keys may have been inspired by the Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama, Mecca of the soul 60's where they put Brothers together. On top of this, their meeting with Danger Mouse on the previous album had most likely expanded their musical vocabulary, as well as their idea of how to produce a record and use a recording studio. It was around this time that Auerbach began working as a producer for artists as diverse as Jessica Lea Mayfield, Nathaniel Mayer, Dr. John, Reigning Sound and Bombino.
Tighten Up (Brothers – 2010)
The famous first seconds of Tighten Up made this single from Brothers an instant classic and one of the group's greatest commercial successes to date. It's a pure hit that would make its way into an episode of Gossip Girl and an advert for Subaru. The song is carried by a funky groove, dirty and stinking, and it bears The Black Keys away from their pure-Blues roots. It's the only track on the album produced by Danger Mouse, and it shows! Auerbach's voice is much more "Stax soul singer" than "old Delta bluesman". Two-thirds of the way through this song about a man's love for a woman who isn't really feeling it, Tighten Up drops its funky tempo and slips into a more classically rock-inflected, hypnotic groove. And as ever with the Keys, Pat Carney's beats give the song its backbone. "I had a drum beat," Carney told Mojo magazine, speaking about Tighten Up. "Actually it's my shitty version of Can's 'Vitamin C' beat. Dan came up with the riff and we both had the idea of a whistling hook. We made the song, didn't think anything of it, shelved the thing for a month and a half. That was 'Tighten Up.' We never thought it would get played on the radio..."
Lonely Boy (El Camino – 2011)
They revere the history of rock'n'roll and the Blues and they don't care who knows it; they cover all manner of songs (The Beatles, Dylan, James Gang, Captain Beefheart, R.L. Burnside, etc.) and success will never change them: Lonely Boy hits all the notes that made The Black Keys famous and offers a sumptuous introduction to their seventh studio album. According to Dan Auerbach, this single was built around the riff from Johnny Burnette's version of Train Kept A-Rollin', but the unexpected backing vocals give it an almost mystical flavour. The brand new Easy Eye Sound studio, which Auerbach had just had built in Nashville, offered the setting for a reunion with Danger Mouse, who had produced Attack & Release three years earlier. "[H]e does push us to do things we normally wouldn't do," Carney has said of Danger Mouse. The result? A confidently eclectic sound, like the T. Rex-style guitars, which lend a touch of glam to both Lonely Boy and the rest of the record, which is inspired by the gutsy rock of The Cramps and The Clash. At the same time, we are treated to some heavier sounds, with guitars to the fore and choruses offering a vital touch of soul.
Fever (Turn Blue – 2014)
In January, 2013, The Black Keys took a break in the middle of their El Camino tour at the Key Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan. This was a recording studio with a Flickinger console, which had been built for Sly Stone. The place was recommended to them by The Kills and it was here that they would record three songs for their forthcoming album: Turn Blue: Gotta Get Away, It's Up to You Now and the aptly-named Fever. The first single from the band's eighth studio album, Fever is a neo-psychedelic, ultra-groovy trip which would not sound out of place on MGMT's first album. With its catchy melody, Fever proves that the Keys can make radio-friendly bangers, slipping their guitars back behind vintage keyboards. Danger Mouse wraps it all up with "stadium anthem" production values, taking care to mellow Carney's drums to perfection. This song easily stands out from this album, undoubtedly The Black Keys' poppiest and most eclectic to date, which also includes Weight of Love with its echoes of Pink Floyd.
Eagle Birds (Let’s Rock – 2019)
A decade on from leaving their native Ohio for Nashville and five years after Turn Blue, The Black Keys returned to their roots and rock'n'roll sound with a pumping Blues heart with Let's Rock. Naturally, the electric guitar has centre stage here, from the first moment to the last. This album does what it says on the tin: Let's Rock takes the listener through all the big, beloved guitar sounds of the 1970s, from Glenn Schwartz and Joe Walsh of the James Gang to Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, by way of Stealers Wheel, T. Rex and Blue Öyster Cult. Eagle Birds is the bridge between these well-trodden influences and the Blues that have always inspired the pair. Inspired by Eagle Bird, a song written in 1980 by Delta guitarist Jessie Mae Hemphill, it features a brief, biting solo from Auerbach: a short, enjoyable passage with a dirty sound. “The record is like a homage to electric guitar. We took a simple approach and trimmed all the fat like we used to.” And they did; right down to the bone!
