Kandace Springs, gone blue

It would be all too easy to dismiss this new arrival as Norah Jones: Sequel of a Soul Singer but no! With her first album, Soul Eyes, Kandace Springs has announced her intent, and brought her unique style to the world. Though it's no coincidence that the singer has signed at Blue Note, home to Norah Jones' record-shattering Come Away With Me, released in 2002. Soul Eyes was produced by the enviously experienced Larry Klein (whose collaborators include, among others: Melody Gardot, Lizz Wright, Joni Mitchell, and Herbie Hancock), and is a delicate mix of jazz, pop, and soul.

Despite the apparent similarities between the two, the young singer-pianist from Nashville who moved to New York has her own flavour to bring to the mix, which sets her apart from her much revered forebear. Sensual vocals and suave style for one.

Always in good company, Kandace Springs has attracted virtuosos to join her, like the trompet player Terence Blanchard, guitarists Dean Parks and Jesse Harris, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, organ player Pete Kuzma, bassist Dan Lutz, and percussionist Pete Korpela. More than enough talent to make a refined, engaging first album. A nice discovery.
