Nick Grant
Walterboro, South Carolina rapper Nick Grant carries on in the tradition of hip-hop's golden age with his gift for storytelling and tight delivery, and an intention to pen rhymes that resonate across decades. Like contemporaries Vince Staples, Avenue, and Denzel Curry, Grant packs his verses with socially conscious wordplay inspired by real-life experiences, and buoys his voice with productions favoring sample-based boom bap over trap stylings. He established himself with the mixtape '88 (2016) and follow-up Return of the Cool (2017) before delivering his major-label debut for Epic, Dreamin' Out Loud (2018). Since the independent release of Welcome to Loveland (2022), Grant has moved to Virgin Music to deliver Sunday Dinner (2023), a deeply personal album seven years in the making.
Inspired by Biggie Smalls, 2Pac, OutKast, Jay-Z, Rakim, and Nas, Grant developed his respect for rap history at a young age, rhyming with friends in middle school and improving his skills into high school. Backed by Grand Hustle Records, his 2016 mixtape '88 (Culture Republic) featured his dense bars and classic jazz and R&B samples, as well as guest appearances by Killer Mike, Big K.R.I.T., and BJ the Chicago Kid. Later that year, he released A Seat at the Table Plus One, a four-song EP inspired by Solange's A Seat at the Table. In early 2017, Grant issued his official debut full-length, Return of the Cool. With increased bravado and lyrical prowess, Return once again featured BJ the Chicago Kid, as well as Ricco Barrino, Dominic Gordon, and WatchTheDuck. The album broke into the Top 30 of the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Primed for greater success, Grant signed with major-label Epic, and in 2018 issued Dreamin' Out Loud, a mixtape that recruited the likes of DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, and Stacy Barthe for collaborations. "'96 Bulls," "The Switch Up," and "Black Woman" quickly became some of the rapper's most popular tracks. As Grant continued to work on his Sunday Dinner album, he offered the independently released 2022 set Welcome to Loveland. Sunday Dinner, filled with familial themes yet not without free-spirited tracks like "Since Elementary," landed on Virgin Music the next year.
