Jasmyn

The former lead singer of Juno-nominated indie rock outfit Weaves, Canada's Jasmyn takes a free-spirited approach to solo material that's both introspective and cathartic. She brought together sounds ranging from harpsichord and synths to tympani and guitar distortion on her John Congleton-produced solo debut, 2022's In the Wild. Then based in Toronto, Jasmyn Burke co-founded Weaves in 2013 with guitarist Morgan Waters, bassist Zach Bines, and drummer Spencer Cole. Delivering a bracing brand of indie rock full of wit, energy, and arty left turns, the group grew out of Burke and Waters trading demos after Waters saw Burke perform solo. After adding the rhythm section, they began to make a name for themselves on the fertile Toronto indie music scene, and almost immediately began recording. The single "Hulahoop" saw release at the end of April 2013 and was followed by a six-song eponymous EP in April of 2014. The group struck a deal with the Brooklyn-based independent label Kanine Records and Canadian label Buzz Records, which jointly released the band's first album, also titled Weaves, in June 2016. Their appearances at that year's SXSW festival earned them plenty of positive press on both sides of the border, especially for Burke's dramatic performance style, and the album was shortlisted for the 2017 Polaris Music Prize in addition to being nominated for a Juno Award in the category of Alternative Album of the Year. Weaves' second album, October 2017's Wide Open, earned them a second Juno nomination and a spot on the 2018 Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Looking to slow down her pace and carve out a musical space of her own, Burke left Weaves in 2020 and relocated to nearby Hamilton on Lake Ontario. With the COVID-19 pandemic taking hold, she spent several months writing new material before working with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton, remotely at first, on her solo debut album. She eventually traveled to Los Angeles to record with the producer in person in 2021, and signed with ANTI- (U.S.) and Royal Mountain Records (Canada). The labels released the completed In the Wild under the mononym Jasmyn in June of 2022.
