Gerd Schaller

Gerd Schaller is a German conductor. Following graduation at the Würzburg College of Music, he became conductor at the Hanover Staatsoper in 1993, principal conductor at the Braunschweig Staatstheater in 1998, and general music director of the Magdeburg Opera in 2003. Among other ensembles he has conducted are the Munich Radio Orchestra, the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Bach Soloists, the Soloists of the Dresden Staatskapelle, and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. Schaller also founded the Ebrach Summer Music Festival, of which he is artistic director. He is noted as a specialist in neglected orchestral and operatic works, and has actively promoted the music of Karl Goldmark, Johann von Herbeck, and Franz von Suppé. However, he is probably best known internationally for his recordings of the symphonies of Anton Bruckner with his handpicked Philharmonie Festiva, released on the Profil label.
