Despite Brian Johnson’s brilliant efforts behind the mic for almost forty years (ignoring the hazy period when he was fired at the end of the Rock or Bust tour), hardcore AC/DC fans will always say that Bon Scott was the band’s most iconic singer. Bonfire is primarily aimed at them. It’s less of a compilation and more of a tribute to the frontman who tragically died in 1980. It’s a testimony of their golden era. Most of the tracks are live versions (making up three of the five discs) recorded either during sessions (Live From the Atlantic Studios) in 1977 or during the Pavillon de Paris concert filmed in 1979 for the film Let There Be Rock. Rare demo versions of some of the band’s classics can be found on the Volts volume, alongside two live performances and a track from TNT, an album only released in Australia in 1975. Bon Scott injected fun into rock’n’roll, mixing it with a subtle decadence and his own magnetic charm. He died from alcohol poisoning in London in 1980, months before the group released Back in Black. So, seeing a record that doesn’t feature Scott appear in this box set as a fifth disc might seem a bit strange. But the band’s biggest commercial success is also a great farewell. It’s a kind of electric announcement that pays tribute to the former singer with songs that are now unavoidable classics.
