It’s strange to think that the relics of one of American pop's most electric and urban bands ended up in the dusty darkness in a barn in upstate New York. For over twenty years, the archives of Blondie (the legendary band that took the late 1970s and early 1980s by storm, comprising of singer Debbie Harry and her then partner, guitarist Chris Stein) were stored in Woodstock. Multi-track tapes, cassettes, vinyl records, gold records, flyers and even phone-sex ads (!) have been unearthed to create this boxset, which looks back over the band’s career through demos, outtakes, alternative versions and unreleased tracks.


Against the Odds 1974 – 1982 is a snapshot of an abundant musical period during which pop, punk, rock and rap happily crossed paths. On the first CD, the embryonic version of Blondie’s huge hit ’Heart of Glass’ is a real standout, though it also features a lot of other marvels that reveal the sound of a band still searching for itself. A different version of ‘Heart of Glass’—a little more peppy this time—can be found on the second CD (Once I Had a Love), as well as their first big hits (the 60s-style ’Denis’ and the immensely popular ’Call Me’, from the American Gigolo soundtrack). There’s also an opportunity to swoon at Debby’s command of the French language in a French version of ’Sunday Girl’. The third CD displays the band’s talent for producing absolute gems, whether they include a reggae rhythm (‘The Tide Is High’), a rap interlude (‘Rapture’) or an unexpected, ultra-minimalist version of ’Heart of Glass’. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
