About Playlist

After the golden age of British Beat, the music scene across the Channel remained the laboratory for future musical aesthetics. Although the psychedelic era may have seemed more discreet there than in its American counterpart, it was in fact the stylistic crossroads for a certain number of artists. Beyond the will of some artists to differentiate themselves from the scene of the new continent, a widened artistic reflection was taking place with the hope of repositioning artists and their sensitivity at the heart of their musical projects. If the experimental dimension of much of the music was reflected in its openness to extra-western sounds (The Beatles), the broadening of musical horizons was also perceptible with the progressive integration of jazz codes by bands such as The Soft Machine. Despite the almost naive character of Robert Wyatt or Syd Barrett's compositions and the sometimes burlesque, or even nonchalant, character of Kevin Ayers' projects, their influence is still widely felt today. This selection showcases a scene that was strong in its blues roots but was also as simple and as beautiful as a summer night.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

by Philippe Gonin

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit.

Record sales and symbolic significance

Lyrics… melodies… everything seemed to come together to make The Dark Side of the Moon a magnificent album. When it came to completing the recording, everyone involved felt like they were holding on to something big. But they didn’t imagine just how big it would be. “When the record was finished, I took a reel-to-reel copy home with me, and I remember playing it for my wife then, and her bursting into tears when it was finished,” says Roger Waters. “And I thought ‘This has obviously struck a chord. I was kinda pleased by that. I thought to myself ‘Wow, this is a pretty complete piece of work’, and I had every confidence that people would respond to it.” On 17th March, 1973, The Dark Side of the Moon entered the Billboard 200 at 95th place. And since then, it’s never left... or almost never, anyway. In July 1988, some 736 weeks later, it dropped off the charts, only to return again, totalling more than 1,500 weeks!

Of course, there are always cynics. Some saw strong parallels with The Beatles’ work, viewing Eclipse as a cover of She's So Heavy and the guitar in Brain Damage as a copy of Dear Prudence. Others have claimed that if you play the album while watching The Wizard of Oz there’s an incredible synchronicity that could only have been planned. And then there were those who were still upset that Syd Barrett had left the group, claiming that The Dark Side of the Moon was too commercially focused.

Over the years, however, one thing seems to have become clear: all the right elements were there to make it one of the greatest albums of all time, from the incredible simplicity of the refracted light on the album cover to the impeccable production and the undeniable quality of the arrangements. Mason admits that with hindsight “it's easy to see it as a turning point [...], but at the time, it was just another album.” In addition to Dick Parry's saxophone, the strong blues comeback (Money) and the “soul” voices no doubt helped fuel the huge success in America. Beyond just the figures, The Dark Side of the Moon and its iconic album cover is Pink Floyd's best-known record. Sale estimates range from just over 24 million certified copies to over 45 million unofficial units - not quite Michael Jackson's unbeatable Thriller, but Pink Floyd are still firmly anchored in the Top 10. It’s worth noting that in 2002, the album sold 400,000 copies, making it the 200th best-selling album of that year, thirty years after its release...

Pink Floyd revisited the album during The Division Bell Tour in 1994. With Roger Waters having left the group, the band was led by David Gilmour. They decided to play the entire album for a few of the tour dates. This cover version later became the second CD of the live album Pulse. Since then, countless groups (Dream Theater, The Flaming Lips) and collectives have covered the album in a whole range of styles, such as metal (Doom Side of the Moon), reggae (Dub Side of the Moon) and jazz (Jazz Side of the Moon or Celebrating The Dark Side of the Moon by the guitarist Nguyên Lê). It just goes to show - as if that were even necessary – that this is one of the most influential albums of all time.
