About Playlist
The story of Eunice Kathleen Waymon is the one of an artist emblematic of the difficulty of being born in a country under the yoke of racial segregation. Nina Simone (The word Nina, which means "little girl" in Spanish, is a nickname given to her by a boyfriend, and Simone is borrowed from the actress Simone Signoret, whom she saw in Jacques Becker's "Golden Helmet") was an American pianist, singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist in the United States. Originally wanting to become a classical pianist, she eventually played and performed in a variety of musical styles including jazz, blues, classical, soul, folk, R&B, gospel and pop.
Over the course of her career, Nina Simone recorded more than 40 albums, from her debut in 1958 until around 1974. Her original style is a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music. Her music was very influential in the struggle for equal rights for blacks in the United States during this period. She was a powerful source of inspiration for that generation and continues to be so for those who follow.
