Malcolm John Rebennack (1940-2019) better known by his stage name Dr. John, was originally a pianist and studio musician who stormed recording sessions from the 1950s both in New Orleans and beyond. He became known as a solo artist at the end of the 60s with a repertoire inspired by voodoo culture and ceremonies, and later Medicine Shows, and pursued an exemplary career as a singer, rendering him one of the most important local music icons and gave him access to an international stage. His style mixed blues, pop, jazz, boogie-woogie, rock and roll and cabaret, with remarkable compositions often performed by his peers. Here’s a retrospective of the remarkable talents of Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John.
