About Playlist

When the Bebop revolution came around, many Jazzmen found themselves in a difficult position: Some of them didn't have the technical ability, some simply didn't have a taste for the frenzied improvisations, and others didn't identify with the African American culture of the great boppers. So, a new form of Jazz was born, this time in California, it focused on the purity of sound and melody and left a lot of room for white musicians. This new generation was defined by one word. This was COOL Jazz. Explore the universe of its biggest stars.

Kamasi Washington, the Sax of Angels

by Marc Zisman

After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene.

Performed by a cast that features two drummers (Ronald Bruner Jr. and Tony Austin), two bassists (Miles Mosley and Thundercat), two keyboards (Brandon Coleman and Cameron Graves), a string section of 32 violinists and a choir of about twenty singers, this immense experimental suite draws as much from the heritage of John Coltrane as Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler, Horace Tapscott’s Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and Weather Report. The listener is carried away by blown-up waves, wonderfully composed themes (the sublime Askim), varied reinterpretations (the classic Cherokee, Debussy’s Clair de lune) as well as arrangements that shoot out in every direction. Kamasi Washington obviously didn’t just grow up on jazz, many other influences − soul, funk, rock, classical music and rap – transpire through The Epic, an album that requires several listens to fully appreciate its density. A final result that required a full month of work from the author and his accomplices. He spent thirty days with the entire West Coast Get Down recording in their lair, creating Kamasi’s music, but also using the creations of each member of the collective. Legend has it that close to two hundred compositions were recorded during these thirty days, a quarter of which can be attributed to the saxophonist.

The fact that this triple album was released by Brainfeeder further reinforced its status as an oddity. Some purists might have dreamt of a possible release under Impulse!, but it was not meant to be. By signing with Flying Lotus’ label, Kamasi Washington is completely in step with his time and personality. With the West Coast Get Down, he then embarked on a worldwide marathon tour. Concert hall tickets were quickly sold out, everyone wanted to hear, and see, this musical behemoth, “Kendrick’s saxophonist”, “Brainfeeder’s new signing”, the one that just plays jazz “differently”… With the element of surprise gone, the Californian artist didn’t rest on his laurels. During a weeklong break in the middle of this endless tour, he booked a studio and convinced his exhausted crew to record a follow-up to The Epic. After the triple came the double: Heaven and Earth. A new tsunami of plural musical styles, just as mystical, just as collaborative, lively and eclectic (it features a cover of Freddie Hubbard’s Hubtones and, wilder, the theme of Bruce Lee’s film Fist of Fury). Kamasi Washington’s music remains elusive as ever, but that is its fundamental purpose. He’s now left Brainfeeder to sign with Young Turks, the label othat houses The XX, FKA Twigs and Sampha, not really known for their jazz music. Time will tell if the “non-jazz” fans of The Epic will once again be willing to dive back into an ocean of improvisations that confirms the talent of its creator and his accomplices…

NB: quotes from Kamasi Washington, interview by Marc Zisman for Télérama Sortir (November 2015).
