About Playlist

Throughout his life pianist Randy Weston has alway placed emphasis on his African roots. This is because very early on his parents told him what was what. "They explained to me that before anything else I was African, born in the United States. My father added that Africa was the past, the present and the future. *He told me that what I was taught at school or by Hollywood films happened after colonisation and segregation, but rarely at the time of the first civilisations.* By 1961, at 35 years of age, Weston returned to the land of his ancestors. "I embraced the sun! I came to this land by plane, this land that my ancestors left chained up in boats! I have visited 18 African countries. Whether the music be from the mountains of Morocco or Nigeria, above all I look for traditional sounds. By listening to these sounds I better understand the foundations of jazz and how it has evolved..." In 1967, the New-Yorker met The Gnawas. "I was living in Tangiers where I met Abdellah El Gourd. He played me some guembri and suddenly I thought I was listening to Jimmy Blanton, the double-bassist from Duke Ellington. The idea we had of African music at the time was that it was essentially rhythmic: drums, tam-tams, etc. But with this string instrument I heard something very similar to the banjo!" Throughout his long career, Randy Weston has kept to his own game, leaving African music to develop by itself. "I have never looked to westernized or modernized African music, only traditional African music and its spirituality." So, when people ask me what I play, I never respond with "jazz" but with "African rhythms.""
