Miles Davis, Fingers in The Plug Socket

by Marc Zisman

In 1968, Miles Davis succumbed to the charm of the electricity fairy. Bewitched by the psychedelic and funky revolutions of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, the trumpet player made a radical change and, in passing, changed jazz too.

In the first part of the ‘70s, and until his retirement in 1975, several live albums (first released in Japan) enriched the Miles Davis’ funky discography, with more or less success and interest: At Fillmore : Live At The Fillmore East, Live-Evil, In Concert – Recorded Live At The Philharmonic Hall, New York, Black Beauty : Miles Davis At Fillmore West, Dark Magus : Live At Carnegie Hall and above all Pangaea and Agharta, two double albums recounting the concert that took place on 1st February, 1975, in Osaka, Japan. Hours and hours of tapes that complete studio album reworked on the mixing board. Miles’ genius is probably located in between those two falsely contradictory approaches. The orgy of these improvisations never fall into a rut and often belong to the realm of trance put against those mille-feuilles of sounds that he assembles with his inseparable producer Teo Macero. It’s a part of jazz history that is also a part of funk history.
