Sibelius: The 10 key moments of his discography

by Pierre-Yves Lascar

The discography of the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865 – 1957) is wonderfully rich, high-quality and diverse. Qobuz offers you an overview focusing on 10 particularly significant moments.

8. This was also the year of a revelation, that of Kullervo, conducted by Paavo Berglund who made his debut at Bournemouth with a vast exploration of Sibelius’s works at the end of 1970 (when he had not yet officially taken up his post as musical director of the ensemble). Complete symphonies, poems and some stage music followed until 1978. But his first involvement with Sibelius was the recording of a work that had been forgotten until then, despite various attempts at resurrection, the most striking of which was that of Jussi Jalas in 1965 in Helsinki for the Sibelius centenary. In two days - the session took place on 21 and 22 November - Berglund turned the discography upside down. Music lovers discovered a strong, powerful, epic work, as well as an exciting young conductor, who would make a lasting impression on the discography with three complete symphonies. From then on, Kullervo would become one of the favourite works of Sibelius enthusiasts, and you can see why: it was a stroke of genius that this great symphony in five parts, with soloists, choir and a large orchestra, which the composer did not really use afterwards, was written in five parts. The Finn also turned away once and for all from the great form that he deployed for 70 minutes in Kullervo. It is also here, in the recapitulation of the first movement (at 9'55), that you will find one of the most beautiful melodic themes written between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
