At the age of 28, Big Pun joined a long list of deceased rappers who left fans too early. Endangered Species is a compilation of much of Pun's best work. All of Pun's hits are included here, including "It's So Hard" and the infectious dancefloor filler "Still Not a Player." Also included are several of Pun's most memorable guest appearances, such as his cameo on the Beatnuts classic "Off the Books," as well as some of his work with Terror Squad. Most of Big Pun's fans will buy the album for unreleased material such as "Mama" and "Wishful Thinking," a collaboration with Kool G. Rap and Cypress Hill's B Real. While the unreleased material may not be Big Pun's best work, it will also not disappoint his fans. The album includes some of Pun's remixes of pop hits like Ricky Martin's "Livin' la Vida Loca" and Brandy's "Sittin' on Top of the World." Taken as a whole, the album is an impressive document of an artist that truly was a force to be reckoned with. © Jon Azpiri /TiVo

It's a rare Wu-Tang solo album that doesn't bear the stamp of the collective's production mastermind, RZA, to some extent, and Raekwon's second full-length is no different. Except for the fact that RZA doesn't actually appear on Immobilarity, the paranoid synth-strings and soundtrack feel he pioneered on Wu-Tang's Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers and Forever are all over this album. The producers, including Raekwon's American Cream Team, Infinite Arkatechz, and Six July Productions, give Immobilarity the same sounds RZA gave to Raekwon's first album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Though few rappers are more entitled to the sound than Raekwon, most of these songs just don't contribute to the lyrical concerns or delivery (a notable exception is "Sneakers," the only track produced by Pete Rock). And since the album's success depends wholly on Raekwon himself, it's almost impossible for him to trump the excellence of his first album. © Keith Farley /TiVo

While Deck has always been overshadowed by the more personable bees in his Wu-Tang hive, there is no disputing his messiah-like flow and delivery pure as artesian water. Wu-Tang's diehard fans have always demanded more and Deck gives them just that, as he routinely leaves microphones grotesquely disfigured on his stellar debut. Besides the usual assortment of high-powered street jams usually found on Wu-Tang endeavors, what separates Deck from the next bodega philosopher lays in his disposition, as he also employs his verbal gifts as a tool of enlightenment. He lays out a path to righteousness with "Elevation" and "Show and Prove," while the warm piano chords of "Longevity" details his plans for global domination. Although the man behind Wu's music, RZA, only furnishes two tracks, Deck shows versatility behind the boards as well, handling a majority of the production chores. There is truly no anti-venom on record capable of diluting the Inspecktah's fatal sting once inflicted. © Matt Conaway /TiVo

The fourth offering from the rambunctious hip-hop junkies the Beatnuts is an all-out assault on the eardrums. This is crack-open-a-party music, with beats that have been chiseled with a Latin feel. Lyrics are rough, rugged, and raunchy. Songs like "Watch Out Now" and "Turn It Out" (featuring Greg Nice) are just plain fun, as close to feel-good music as hardcore hip-hop gets. Other tracks that will satisfy include "Puffin' on a Cloud," "You're a Clown" (featuring Biz Markie), "Buddah in the Air," and the Spanglish headsplitter "Se Acabo." Even the thematic "Look Around," a departure from the Beatnuts' usual hedonistic content, is a pleasant surprise. The true core of the Beatnuts' sound is their fleshy, textured beats, which are dense and dipped in cannabis -- flutes, synthesizers, and various percussion instruments seem to float over and around deep drum machine kicks and snares. Swelling with an eclectic assortment of hypnotic sounds, A Musical Massacre is among 1999's most entertaining hip-hop albums. © M.F. DiBella /TiVo
