Traces

Steve Perry

Rock - Verschenen op 5 oktober 2018 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res
Steve Perry really meant it when he sang Don't Stop Believin' in 1981. For a long time, the former singer from Journey insisted that he and music had broken up for good. He hid himself away for quite some time before returning with this third solo album: Traces. It’s a comeback that owes a lot to his relationship with Kellie Nash, a young woman who made him love music again and sadly passed away before her time… For Perry, Traces is a broken-hearted album, but also a tale of reconstruction, resilience and getting back on your feet. Before even listening to the record, the intriguing album cover is worth a look at. The Californian certainly doesn’t skimp on details... Welcome to the American star’s Garden of Eden! At the front there’s an old white guitar which serves as a perch for a dove of peace, as well as a snake wrapped around a bottle of champagne. Then, on closer inspection, you see a flaming microphone hidden in the garden, electrical cables and an upside-down pin-up girl. The artist even appears to have discretely embedded himself into the landscape, with his back turned to the audience. The many (maybe too many) symbols sum up part of his career but also reflect his years of isolation. Staying true to an eighties rock style, Steve Perry’s voice is still intact. The 69-year-old dives into his feelings and seeks to take his listeners for an emotional ride. Addressing the crowd with the hit No Erasin', Perry confirms that he’s back and that he’s missed all these faces. From the soul of No More Crying to the intense final track We Fly, Steve Perry heals all wounds inflicted on the body and soul. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz

The Prodigal Son

Ry Cooder

Rock - Verschenen op 11 mei 2018 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res Onderscheidingen Songlines Five-star review
© TiVo

Countries

Van William

Alternative en Indie - Verschenen op 19 januari 2018 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Places have always mattered a great deal for Van Pierszalowski a.k.a. Van William: California, where he grew up, as well as Alaska, which he regularly visits and where he was even a professional fisherman, and Norway, at last… It’s probably for this reason that the former leader of the band Port O’Brien has called this disc Countries.  It’s an album that blends folk, rock, pop and country in a fluid and almost cinematographic way. Most of all, this opus highlights more than ever the romantic voice of this endearing songwriter. This romance sometimes hurts (the consequences of a break-up sometimes rear their heads) and sometimes finds the perfect shrine in interlacing light guitar with soft percussion and incandescent harmonies. In this enchanting modern folk rock digression, you’ll even find the Söderberg sisters (a.k.a. First Aid Kit) on the title Revolution. © CM/Qobuz

Vibes Of Truth

The 3 Pieces

R&B - Verschenen op 1 januari 1975 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Donald Byrd's most widely known ventures from jazz into a more pop-oriented sound in the 1970s took place with the Blackbyrds. As a less celebrated outing that combined funk, jazz, and soul in a vocal format, he also produced this obscure album by the 3 Pieces, who were naturally a trio, though some other musicians played on the LP, including Ray Parker, Jr., who is responsible for the guitar on "Shortnin' Bread." They were no mere Byrd vehicle, with the group writing all of the material except for the instrumental cover of "Shortnin' Bread." Very much of its period, Vibes of Truth is a pretty unmemorable entry into the funk-soul-jazz hybrid genre, with medium-temperature grooves and only adequate singing and songwriting. Even the attempts at tough lyrics -- "Concrete Jungle" sings about rats in the urban squalor -- are a little undermined by the generally sweet-natured tone of the threesome, and the arrangements are sometimes longer and more repetitious than justified. The 2010 CD reissue on BGP adds historical liner notes. © Richie Unterberger /TiVo

Prophets Of Rage

Prophets Of Rage

Rock - Verschenen op 15 september 2017 | Fantasy Records

Hi-Res Booklet
The cast is really hot stuff! Under this more than telling nickname of Prophets Of Rage (as it happens the title of a song recorded in 1988 by Public Enemy on the album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back) hides the meeting of three leading bands from the 90s: Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk from Rage Against The Machine, Chuck D from Public Enemy and B-Real from Cypress Hill! It’s some kind of vengeful comeback for RATM without Zack de la Rocha on the mic, replaced for the occasion by the duo Chuck D / B-Real. We suspect that this tantalizing super group offers tsunamis of metallic guitar riffs, over muscled rhythmic and lyrics engaged more than ever. There’s of course all of that (Unfuck The World, Living On The 110, Hail To The Chief, Who Owns Who…), but the true strength of this album is to also go on a less conventional path, like the Hispanic then funky emanations of Take Me Higher. Another strong point of these Prophets of Rage is the improbable association of Chuck D’s baritone voice to the really nasal voice of B-Real. It’s a yin and yang approach that renders the matter even more original, a real punch in the face. © CM/Qobuz
