Niels Rønsholdt: Country

Jakob Kullberg

Kamermuziek - Verschenen op 19 november 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
With Country, composer Niels Rønsholdt widens the scope of his music, reimaging the country genre as a concerto for singing solo cellist and chamber orchestra. Country shows off the fine voice of soloist Jakob Kullbergand and his extraordinary ability to play the cello "alla chitarra", like a guitar. Here Rønsholdt finds expressive connections among far-flung sources, creating music which reflects and refracts its inspirations in the rich American country tradition and a sort of Nordic pastoral yearning for love, with a critique of nationalism. Niels Rønsholdt is a Danish composer born 1978. His works include experimental operas, installations, performances and concert music. Rønsholdt works with a kind of "method composing" where conceptual constructions involve performance, text and a musical expression that reference e.g. mainstream music and historical musical forms. Rønsholdt is educated at the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus with Karl Aage Rasmussen and Bent Sørensen and in Berlin with Helmut Oehring. He has been commissioned by esteemed international ensembles and performed on most European contemporary music festivals. © Dacapo

Archive of Emotions & Experiences, Book 1 "Birds"

Lenio Liatsou

Klassiek - Verschenen op 12 november 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
With "Archive of Emotions and Experiences, Book 1: Birds", composer Niels Rønsholdt makes a decisive and gripping contribution to the solo piano repertoire. In an imagined future without birds, the pianist opens an archive of human emotions and experiences and tells of the creatures that once flew through the air while singing. Rønsholdt's Archive is a fascinating solo album that offers great insight into his unique musical thinking. Pianist Lenio Liatsou’s commitment to new music has its roots in her study years in London, where her relationship with the late Susan Bradshaw catalyzed her increasing commitment to contemporary repertoire and new music. Since her debut at the Purcell Room, she has appeared in prominent new music festivals and venues, including the Carnegie Hall, Darmstadt, Spor, 1011Klang, Onassis Cultural Centre and the Munich Biennale. As part of her activity in music theatre she has recently initiated Once to Be Realised, based on Jani Christou sketches, in which she collaborates with the composers Beat Furrer, Barblina Meierhans, Olga Neuwirth, Samir Odeh-Tamimi, Youghi Pagh-Paan and Christian Wolff. She also teaches contemporary piano performance. © Dacapo Records

Ib Glindemann: Concertos

Per Morten Bye

Klassiek - Verschenen op 22 oktober 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
Jazz and swing undoubtedly weighed the most in Ib Glindemann's creative life, and few others meant more to big-band and jazz music in Denmark from the 1950s onwards than he. It remains, however, that Denmark's well-known jazz orchestra leader, trumpeter and composer had a classical side. This recording is the first to feature a fully classical Glindemann program: two sublime instrumental concertos and an impressive medley of his music celebrating his distinctive flair for writing happy, undemanding, festive and effective music. The Medley is a gathering of four pieces into a suite, arranged by Glindemann and Wolfgang Käfer. The pieces collected here come from films or from the world of program music, evoking pictures of everyday life in Copenhagen. © Dacapo Records

Bo Holten: Schlagt sie tot! (Live)

Jakob Högström

Opera - Verschenen op 27 augustus 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
Schlagt sie tot! is an opera about radical change and religious fanaticism. It paints a multifaceted portrait of a complex figure who transformed the world, namely the controversial catalyst of the Reformation, Martin Luther. He was a charismatic, uncompromising artistic personality, at times hateful and in constant struggle with his inner demons. Five hundred year old events, not unlike the politics of our own age, are brought to life in Bo Holten’s and Eva Sommestad Holten’s music drama, which reflects human emotion in a society set ablaze by the fire of change. © Dacapo

Music of the Abyss

Esbjerg Ensemble

Klassiek - Verschenen op 13 augustus 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
Rued Langgaard’s (1893-1952) inner division can be experienced at its extreme in the chamber music written between 1913 and 1924, in which the secure world of his youth is undercut by a dark musical understream. This is most apparent in the work for piano, Music of the Abyss, which is presented here in a transcription for chamber ensemble by Allan Gravgaard Madsen (born 1984) of which this is the first recording. This meeting between Langgaard and Gravgaard brings to a climax the work’s view of modern man’s destructive strength in a crazy ride towards the abyss. © Dacapo Records

Choirbook

Danish National Vocal Ensemble

Koormuziek - Verschenen op 25 juni 2021 | Dacapo

Booklet
A lyrical suite of seven chapters for mixed choir a cappella, Jesper Koch’s Choirbook is a meditation on nature, complex and yet simple, communicating openly with the listener. Sincerity and a sense of timelessness pervade this large-scale work based on the poetry of Frank Kjørup, highly accessible and deeply immersed in the mysteries of its own beauty. Danish composer Jesper Koch (born 1967) wrote very little vocal music until he reached his mid-40’s, primarily focusing on music for symphony orchestra. But in 2012, something unexpected happened. Jesper Koch suddenly felt a strong urge to write for the human voice and go back to the basic principles of melody and tonality, after having written rather complex orchestral music. The music in the vocal project Choirbook is melodic, concise and transparent: "When I write purely melodically, nothing must stand in the way of clarity. Soeverything superfluous is stripped away", says Jesper Koch. © Dacapo

Singing Secrets

Irena Kavčič

Klassiek - Verschenen op 21 mei 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
A professor for many years, Per Nørgård has been loudly praised and awarded great prizes around the world. His music, though, can be relatively quiet in its exterior and searching by nature. Per Nørgård holds his senses open to signals from the planet and the cosmic miracle. This Danish Nestor works not so much for deafening fanfares or death by double bar lines — so, "when do you begin to get things finished?", as his mother once sighed! For this reason his pieces may require a little extra attention. A work by Nørgård comes to life when its listeners attend to it with just the right amount of openness. Our receptiveness is rewarded tenfold as pleasure in responding to the works, and in the longer term by a generally enhanced attentiveness. "Singing Secrets" is a thoughtful and profoundly lyrical album which is both a strikingly original statement and a splendid addition to Dacapo Records’ extensive Norgard catalogue. The program demonstrates the range of Norgard’s compositions, with chamber and vocal pieces illustrating some of the distinctive steps of his musical journey. © Dacapo Records

Kuhlau: Works for Solo Piano, Vol. 1

Marie-Luise Bodendorff

Klassiek - Verschenen op 7 mei 2021 | Dacapo

Booklet
Friedrich Kuhlau is known as Beethoven’s strongest advocate in Denmark and the man who wrote Elverhøj. But Kuhlau was first and foremost a pianist, one whose works for the instrument have a depth and character of their own. In the first of a new series, Marie-Luise Bodendorff reassesses Kuhlau’s contribution to the piano literature with fresh, muscular performances of music including the previously unrecorded Divertissement, Op. 37. Marie-Luise Bodendorff took her first piano lessons at the age of five and was admitted to the Hochschule fur Musik in Karlsruhe at the age of 10. From 2002 to 2007 she studied with Russian piano authority Vladimir Krainev at the Hannover University of Music, Drama, and Media. She currently resides in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has been a part time professor of piano at the Royal Danish Academy of Music since 2016. © Dacapo

Medea/Lysistrata

Tuva Semmingsen

Klassiek - Verschenen op 26 maart 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
The classical figures of Medea and Lysistrata have captivated creative artists for centuries. The latest of them is Steingrímur Rohloff, an Icelandic-German composer who found his sensual, crystal-clear musical voice while studying with Gerard Griséy in Paris. The specially configured music recorded here benefits from Tuva Semmingsen’s ravishing voice and Rohloff’s decade of collaboration with Esbjerg Ensemble – to beautiful, resonant and dramatic effect. The Icelandic-German composer Steingrimur Rohloff is one of the most prominent young Scandinavian composers, and his works have been performed in more than 25 countries worldwide. He studied in Cologne and in Paris at the Conservatoire Superieur and the IRCAM with Gérard Grisey and Marc-André Dalbavie among others; this French school of crystalline orchestral music has influenced Rohloff profoundly. Among Rohloff's many awards is the prestigious B.A. Zimmermann Award, which he won whilst living in Germany. The jury described his music as: "of an original fantasy ... exciting melodic creativity... colorful harmonies…" © Dacapo

Octagonal Room

Jesper Sivebæk

Klassiek - Verschenen op 19 maart 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
The prize-winning Lars Hegaard (born 1950) has, over more than 40 years, been an important voice in Danish musical life. Centered on the composer’s own instrument, the guitar, Dacapo present six of his most important works for small groups. With their refined modernist expressivity, they offer a fascinating picture of the guitar’s possibilities as a solo instrument, as accompanist and as the first amongst equals in chamber music. Lars Hegaard studied guitar with Ingolf Olsen (diploma 1973, music teaching degree 1977), and composition with Ib Nørholm (diploma 1980). He has also taken a music degree at the University of Copenhagen. In 1983 he was awarded a three-year working grant by the National Arts Foundation, and in 1992 the Sylvia and Poul Schierbeck Grant. In addition to that, he has since 1986 received annually working grants from the National Arts Foundation. © Dacapo Records

Peter Heise: The Song Edition

Astrid Nordstad

Klassiek - Verschenen op 12 februari 2021 | Dacapo

Booklet
Long regarded by Danish musicians as their secret treasure, the songs of Peter Heise perfectly represent the unique qualities and achievements of the Danish Golden Age. Though mostly not in direct contact with each other, these artists and writers shared a profound interest in exploring and understanding their personal life and experience, and left a body of introspective work which has had a huge impact on European culture. No longer a secret, these songs can now take their rightful place alongside the works of Hans Christian Andersen, Christen Kobke, Soren Kierkegaard and so many others. © Dacapo

Heise: Drot og marsk (Live)

Royal Danish Orchestra

Opera - Verschenen op 5 februari 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
This is a story about a struggle for power in old Denmark, and a magnificent opera about events which led to the murder of King Erik Clipping in 1286. To present this dramatic episode from Danish history, a power play rooted in love, jealousy and honor, Heise composed gripping music with a razor-sharp dramatic sense and great lyrical beauty. It is Danish romance at its most powerful and immediate. Drot og Marsk has been called “the best opera of the 19th Century”. The opera was composed in the years 1876-77 to a libretto by Christian Richardt and had its premiere at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen in 1878 and was quickly established as part of the theatre’s regular repertoire. Drot og Marsk is amongst the most frequently performed Danish operas. © Dacapo

Holmboe: String Quartets, Vol. 1

Nightingale String Quartet

Kamermuziek - Verschenen op 8 januari 2021 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
After award-winning Langgaard recordings, the Nightingale String Quartet turns to one of the great unsung quartet cycles of the last century, that of Vagn Holmboe (1909-1996). Volume 1 in this new cycle takes in the composer’s first published quartet, his momentum-fuelled Quartet No. 3 and his taut Quartet No. 15 with its pathos-imbued funeral march. These are fresh new performances that support the idea that the deeper you dig into Holmboe’s music, the more you find. Nightingale String Quartet was formed in 2007 and consists of Gunvor Sihm and Josefine Dalsgaard, violins, Marie Louise Broholt Jensen, viola, and Louisa Schwab, cello. All four are students in the soloist course at the academies in Copenhagen and Aarhus with Professor Tim Frederiksen as mentor and chamber music teacher. Since September 2012 the quartet has also studied regularly with Professor Hatto Beyerle, founder of the Alban Berg Quartet and ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy). © Dacapo Records

Romance

Christina Åstrand

Klassiek - Verschenen op 20 november 2020 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
Christina Åstrand's album "Romance" brings together a personal selection of rarely heard items from the classical Danish repertoire for violin. In the decades around the turn of the 20th century, the violin enjoyed a star moment of its own as the 'singing' instrument par excellence. Under the direction of Jukka Iisakkila, Christina Åstrand and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra prove to be ideal interpreters of this kind of music, poised between charm and soulfulness. Christina Åstrand (born 1969) is one of the most remarkable violinists in Scandinavia. At the early age of 13, she was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus and at just 22 she was engaged as leader of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. She was born in Skanderborg into a musical family and began playing the violin according to the Suzuki method at the age of four. Christina Åstrand – both as a soloist and chamber musician – makes a great effort to spread the knowledge of Danish music, both through concerts and her many recordings. © Dacapo

The Emperor's New Clothes

Palle Knudsen

Klassiek - Verschenen op 23 oktober 2020 | Dacapo

Hi-Res Booklet
Bo Holten has composed more than 100 works including symphonies, solo concertos, works for chorus and orchestra, operas, and musicals. He has also written works for chamber ensembles, song cycles, and pieces for percussion ensemble, as well as scores for films and television series. He is regarded as Denmark’s most prolific composer of lyric theatre and is an internationally renowned conductor. This newly-recorded retrospective includes three of his most cherished concert works: a charismatic concert opera based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, a touching song cycle to evocative poetry by Sophus Claussen and an oboe concerto inspired by the instrument’s unique lyrical capabilities. All three reveal Holten’s characteristic combination of wit and profundity, all the more so under his own musical direction. © Dacapo
