On her 2017 debut album, Off the Radar, Noga Erez explored a versatile pop sound, with deep bass and haunting themes. She seemed utterly liberated, unleashing daring songs, prompting glowing comparisons to female pop queens. Four years later, the Israeli singer returns with Kids, with a much lighter sound, minimalist production and much more defined song structures. We immediately sense a desire to standardise the format, to perhaps approach what Billie Eilish does so well: create dark, cynical, offbeat and ironic pop. Titles like Views and KTD make that trend undeniable; but Erez didn’t stop there. In the middle of the album, she unveils darker, more serious desires, sounding more like M.I.A. And if those comparisons to other artists are sometimes a little too facile, one cannot help but notice that the singer ostensibly feeds off her sisters. For better, as in the excellent End of the Road and Bark Loud, but also occasionally for worse… Although generally well-constructed, Kids nevertheless betrays a certain artistic indecision, a somewhat muddled spirit. But after all, that’s often from where and when good music emerges. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
