Known for his DIY ethos and his mesmerizing live shows, William Rezé, who goes by the name of Thylacine, is a French electronic musician, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. A classically-trained musician, Rezé discovered electronic music while studying fine arts in his native city of Angers. After a stint as a saxophonist for a couple of local bands and jazz orchestras, he began crafting beats in the intimacy of his own bedroom, aided by a drum machine, a keyboard, and a saxophone. Intuitive, his debut EP, dropped in 2012 and quickly became an underground sensation, prompting an appearance at the Printemps de Bourges festival in 2013. Entirely composed during a trip aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway, the eclectic Transsiberian (2015) further developed the beatmaker’s sound, sampling Tatar chants and shamanic rituals in Northern Russia. A restless traveler, Rezé installed a home studio in a caravan and embarked on a sonic adventure that started in Argentina in 2019 (Roads vol. 1) and ended in the Faroe Islands (Roads vol. 2) the following year. The EP Timeless saw the light in 2020 and featured reversions of classical music pieces from Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Always keen to spice things up, Thylacine has spent the last two years going on musical journeys. He boarded a train on Transsiberian in 2015 and jumped into a caravan in South America for the double volume Roads. In Spring when the world was frozen in lockdown, the French electronic producer spent his days shut up in a chalet in the Swiss alps. He’s decided to journey into the past with this album, revisiting works by classical composers – the likes of Satie, Debussy, Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven, Fauré and Schubert. While most recent projects have tried to link the two styles by going for a more conceptual approach, William Rezé takes a more direct route and offers up a series of remixed classical music “hits”. He samples the first few notes of Satie’s Gymnopédie n.1 and sets them to an airy house beat. He covers Gnossienne 1 on an acoustic guitar. He supports Verdi’s Dies Irae with a heavy techno beat, while still preserving the original’s raw drama, and manages to build a bridge between the Italian composer and American EDM. Everybody out! French electronic musicians can no longer be locked away in the studio. More and more of them are setting off on an adventure to compose their music - Molecule in Greenland, NSDOS in Alaska, and indeed Thylacine for his album Transsiberian in 2015 which was composed on the train that runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, exactly as its name suggests. For this new album William Rezé sets off once again, this time on a road-trip to the Andes Cordillera in Argentina with a caravan that he fixed-up and transformed into a mobile studio powered by solar-panels.On this album you can expect to find the plucked strings of the charango, a small guitar that is characteristic of Andean sounds (especially on Murga) and, of course, more atmospheric productions by Thylacine who loves nothing more than to paint pictures with sound. Whilst El Alba featuring Clara Trucco on vocals has a trip hop vibe, the French producer has a similar mentality to Laurent Garnier on The Road with a bass that isn’t too overpowering, a mellow beat and an ethereal piano, making it the perfect sunset soundtrack. On the other hand, Volver is more reminiscent of Paul Kalkbrenner’s style with a hypnotic melody accompanied by the sound of his childhood instrument, the saxophone, subdued with filters.
