Van alle Beatles had John Lennon de meest interessante -- en meest frustrerende -- solocarrière. Hij was in staat om geïnspireerde, meedogenloos eerlijke confessionele teksten en melodieuze nummers te schrijven; hij had tevens de neiging om het er een beetje van te nemen en zonder veel zorgen rechttoe-rechtaan rock & roll uit te draaien. Maar de extremen, in zowel zijn muziek als zijn leven, waren wat hem zo fascinerend maakten.
