He pursued studies in orchestral conducting at the Amsterdam Conservatory, received training from Ed Spanjaard, Hans Vonk, and Iván Fischer, and became an assistant to Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado. Gimeno worked as an assistant conductor with the RCO from 2012 to 2013, but after he substituted for Mariss Jansons and Lorin Maazel on short notice early in 2014, he launched his own career as a conductor. Among the many orchestras he has guest conducted are the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. Gimeno has also appeared with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Mozart, and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and conducted a production of Bellini's Norma at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia. Since 2015, Gimeno has been the music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, and together they have recorded works by Bruckner, Mahler, Shostakovich, and Ravel for PentaTone Classics.
