It was time to complete the circle. For thirty years, all the electronic musicians in Detroit would give long interviews on the importance of Parliament-Funkadelic, George Clinton's group(s), in building up the Michigan scene. Derrick May hit the nail on the head with his famous analogy: "Techno is like George Clinton and Kraftwerk caught in an elevator with only a sequencer to keep them company." A figure on the Detroit scene, Brendan M. Gillen, alias BMG (a member of the pioneering group Ectomorph and the Interdimensional Transmissions label) was in charge of making the connections with this compilation and its fabulous cast for Funkadelic Reworked by Detroiters, which has been released on Westbound Records. The historic Funkadelic label chose to lead with Cosmic Slop, revisited by Moodyman, an artist who symbolises the diversity of the Motor City, home of the Stooges, Motown, Aretha Franklin, Juan Atkins and Jack White. The lunatic producer has chosen to double the length of this charming piece (one of the group’s most popular) sung by Gary Spider. The eponymous album from which it was taken, which appeared in 1973, was a commercial failure but the first to figure the emblematic and lewd artwork of the illustrator Pedro Bell. The remix by Amp Fiddler was also eagerly-awaited. George Clinton's old keyboard player is one of those people who can bring together the generations of Detroit, introducing MPC to J-Dilla, a future titan of hip-hop, who he jammed with at his place with house DJ Andrés. Fiddler covers Let’s Take It To The Stage (in which Parliament criticises the other stars of the period, with Earth, Wind & Fire being dubbed Earth, Hot Air & No Fire and Kool & The Gang christened as Fool & The Gang), with a tight funk beat. As for Andrés, he has captured the more melodic side of Music for my Mother, while Underground Resistance revisits the same piece from a different angle, giving it a robotic rhythm. We also find Recloose or Claude Young Jr – the only one to bring the “club mix” to You And Your Folks – but it is the list of names not present that speaks volumes about this album. Theo Parrish, Carl Craig and Waajeed (founder of hip-hop group Slum Village) had all worked on a remix before deciding not to submit it because they weren't at "the level of being able to handle the Funkadelic heritage". © SB/Qobuz
