Colin Currie Group

The Colin Currie Group is a 12-member chamber ensemble dedicated to performing the music of Steve Reich. Led by virtuoso percussionist Colin Currie, the ensemble has released several albums of Reich’s compositions. Currie formed the CCG in 2006 for a performance of Reich’s Drumming for the composer’s 70th birthday celebration at the BBC Proms. Following its debut, the group toured extensively throughout Europe and Japan, and expanded its repertoire to include Sextet, Pulse, and others. Reich has taken a very active role in shaping the ensemble’s interpretations, and he has participated in both rehearsals and performances. He and Currie performed Clapping Music at a concert in 2014 at London’s Southbank Centre, which also featured the premiere of his Quartet for Two Pianos and Two Vibraphones. Three years later, the group successfully raised enough money through crowdfunding to record Drumming. This collaboration with Synergy Vocals was released in 2018 on Colin Currie Records. Live at Fondation Louis Vuitton was released in the following year, which contained a version of Clapping Music performed by Reich and Currie, and Proverb, Pulse, and other selections. Although the group specializes in Reich’s music, it also explores the music of other contemporary composers. The CCG made its concertante debut in 2019, in a performance of Sofia Gubaidulina’s percussion concerto Glorious Percussion, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra directed by Thomas Dausgaard. The group collaborated with the JACK Quartet in 2022 for a performance of Iannis Xenakis’ Pléïades, to honor the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birthdate. In a further collaboration with Synergy Vocals, the ensemble premiered Reich’s pandemic-inspired work Traveler’s Prayer, conducted by Currie. These performances took place in Europe in 2021, the United States in 2022, and in Tokyo in 2023. The 2023 release Reich: Music for 18 Musicians, is likely the CCG’s most musically ambitious recording yet.
