Christian Li

Christian Li is a genuine child prodigy. The youngest-ever winner, at 12, of the Yehudi Menuhin Competition for Young Violinists in the Junior Category, he then became the youngest artist ever signed to the venerable Decca label. Li was born in Melbourne on October 30, 2007. His father, George Li, is Chinese American, his mother, Katherine Liu, is a first-generation immigrant to Australia. Christian has attended schools in Melbourne and speaks English and Mandarin. Li took up the violin at age five and also studied ballet. After just eight months of study, he appeared in a Chinese television commercial with singer and actor Jacky Cheung, and in 2014, he notched the first of many competition wins at the Golden Beijing Violin Competition. He repeated the feat in 2015 at Italy's Young Artist Semper Music International Competition, and he was soon attracting concert bookings in Australia and beyond, playing a rare 3/4-size Amati violin. Li performed with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra at several Australian festivals and appeared at the American Protégé Showcase 10th Anniversary Concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in 2016. His win at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition, shared with Chloe Chua, heightened his marquee appeal, and in 2019, he was booked to play Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28, at a free outdoor Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concert; despite suffering a nosebleed halfway through, he managed to finish the performance as conductor Benjamin Northey stepped in with a handkerchief. As of 2020, Li was studying with Robin Wilson at the Australian National Music Academy in Melbourne. That year, still just 12, he signed to Decca; he released the single Bazzini: La ronde des lutin later in 2020, and, in 2021, he issued his full-length debut, playing and conducting the Melbourne Symphony in Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Planned appearances at the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic included those in Europe, Israel, and the U.S., as well as a performance with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
