Choir of Keble College, Oxford

The Choir of Keble College, Oxford, includes undergraduate and postgraduate students. Some of them are Choral Scholars who receive financial support, and the choir also supports Organ Scholarships. Keble College, Oxford, was founded in 1870 and has a distinctive appearance with its red brick buildings; a French visitor is said to have asked whether it was not the railroad station. The interior of its chapel is a grand space, acoustically among the finest in Oxford, and it has been home to student choral music almost since its construction; as early as November of 1870, a student named Lavinia Talbot wrote in her diary that she had joined the new College Choir, which has been coeducational since its inception. Student singers participated in a wide variety of events in the College's early years, including the lavish Summer Concert (also called the Eights Week Concert), which included a professional London orchestra, and comic "Smoking Concerts." Today, the Choir of Keble College, Oxford, consists of about 25 undergraduates and postgraduate students. Most are Keble College students, but some come from other Oxford colleges. The choir's principal function is to provide choral music for chapel services three times a week; during the school's term, the choir performs at Sung Eucharist on Sundays, Evensong on Wednesdays, and Sung Compline on Thursdays. In addition, the choir performs at special services, notably during the Christmas season. The Choir of Keble College, Oxford, has often recorded for the Priory label; it released the album The Church Music of Arthur Sullivan in 2001. The choir has toured the U.K. and has also appeared in the Czech Republic, France, and Sweden, as well as at Oxford-related events in Hong Kong and Singapore. The group appears regularly on the BBC Radio 3 network and plans to appear at St. Thomas Church in New York, although a 2020 appearance there was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Choir of Keble College, Oxford, released the album Resurrexi!: Easter in Vienna with Mozart and the Haydn Brothers on the CRD label, with the choir's present conductor, Paul Brough.
