The graceful Maverick
An acutely personal album that remains refreshing, soulful, and stunning throughout.
In the beginning, many people lumped Michael Stafford aka Maverick Sabre together with artists like Plan B and Just Jack. But seven years after the release of his 2012 debut album Lonely Are the Brave, the London-born Irishman boasts a much broader variety of music, mixing soul, folk, rap and pop in a unique way. And this beautiful album When I Wake Up only pushes the limits of this elaborate musical spectrum even further. Just as contemporary British soul music is eclectic, so is Maverick Sabre. He is able to sing in duet with English soul sister Jorja Smith (Slow Down) and the Jamaican Chronixx (Her Grace) and go from stripped back folk soul (War) to sensual downtempo R&B (A Mile Away) and a kind of pop world (Glory). Stafford’s focus was on keeping this third album pure and simple and there is nothing flashy or extravagant about his music here. When I Wake Up retains a very classy feel all the way through.
