Rock - Verschenen op 1 maart 2019 | Tom Petty - Greatest Hits

Hi-Res
The title speaks for itself: The Best of Everything! It’s also a wink at the track recorded by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers for their 1985 album Southern Accents… Tom Petty fans will know all that by heart, but even if this 38-track compilation is mostly aimed at newcomers, the album does include two rarities: an alternative version of the song The Best of Everything and the unpublished track For Real. As an ambassador of timeless rock’n’roll who left us in October 2017 at the age of 66, Tom Petty’s brilliance is perfectly encapsulated in this double album. Much like Bruce Springsteen, Petty was the flame bearer for a rock rebellion. While the topics of his lyrics were somewhat exhausted, he searched for the perfect song through his irresistible choruses and glorious melodies… Surrounded by the Heartbreakers, he was like a rock’n’roll mathematician who knew all the different theorems like the back of his hand, whether they were British (The Rolling Stones and The Beatles) or North American (Dylan and The Byrds), all the while adding his own unique sound. At the end of the 70's, Petty laid down his four aces: Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers (1976), You're Gonna Get It (1978), Damn The Torpedoes (1979) and Hard Promises (1981). They were classic, classy albums that were superbly written and performed, and we find many of the key tracks in this compilation. Punk, post-punk and new wave were big at the time and the styles fed into Petty’s music, proving that he could make something new out of something old. Or rather that he could take the rock he had grown up with (he was 15/20 years old in the 1965/1970 golden age) and give it a new energy... “What’s great, Tom Petty said in a 2006 interview, is when someone comes up to me on the street and more or less thanks me for all my work. They often call it the soundtrack to their lives. It's an incredible feeling. And that's all an artist asks for.” Perhaps The Best Of Everything - The Definitive Career Spanning Hits Collection 1976-2016 would be better off labelled under “film music”! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

As pianist Joachim Kühn mentions in the album’s sleeve notes, he gave sixteen concerts with the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman between 1995 and 2000. “Before each concert, Ornette wrote ten new songs, which we would work out and record in his Harmolodic studio in Harlem for a week. Since he wanted me to supply the chords (sounds) for his melodies, I was directly involved in the composition process. After the concert, these pieces were never played again. Now I am the only one who has all the recordings and the sheet music of the 170 pieces. So now, after about twenty years, I have reassembled and recorded them for solo piano. Apart from Lonely Woman, none of these pieces were ever released by Ornette Coleman.” This fascinating collection helped Kühn author a high-class solo album. At 75 years old, he has added some of the free-jazz diktats to his repertoire and is now armed with a rather broad range of shades. He approaches this aptly titled Melodic Ornette Coleman without disrupting the narrative or melodic weave. And because this is Joachim Kühn, the improvisations are anything but plain. In his most melancholic moments, the German pianist still unveils harrowing facets of his musical personality. Superb! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

After the amazing masterpieces of Revolver and Sergeant Pepper's, The Beatles dove back into the art of pure writing, bringing about a certain level of sobriety and leaving aside their recent psychadelic delusions, awesome as they were. Released in November 1968, this double White Album is a return to more refined pop and rock; the essence of their art. The title of the disc, The Beatles, does not manage to hide the growing dissension between the four musicians at the time, and their diverging personalities saw this album herald the beginning of the end for the Fab Four, and the budding of their future solo careers... Despite all of this, The Beatles managed to release a new and totally unique album here, which can be enjoyed step by step as a true emotional rollercoaster: The fantasy of Dear Prudence, the dark madness of Revolution 9, the legendary guitar solo in While My Guitar Gently Weeps, the labyrinth of Happiness Is A Warm Gun and Sexy Sadie, the emotion of Julia (which Lennon dedicated to his mother, who died when he was 17), the purity of Blackbird and the ultra-violent tsunami that is Helter Skelter… the White Album is a brilliant production, a new masterpiece from a group growing apart ... For its 50-year anniversary, this legendary double album makes a return in Deluxe Edition form, a well-deserved title. As well as the stereo remixed version by legendary producer George Martin's son, the original mono version (praised by purists for this format) and the famous Esher Demos there are 27 demo tracks of some famous hits recorded in Harrison’s home and three studio-session CDs. It’s a marvellous collection (107 tracks in total!) which let’s us further explore this glorious piece of work that still fascinates us 50 years after its creation… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Piano/bass/drums trios are like small islands which are deserted in spirit and highly populated in reality. And jazz pianists can’t help but keep coming back to visit! Some even live there all year round. For Yaron Herman, playing as a trio means "freedom with constraints": make something new out of something old, don't simply copy the big names (Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Ahmad Jamal...), bend the rules by staying within them and, most importantly, have something to say. The Franco-Israeli jazzman is fully aware of the difficulty and ambiguity of the task. "As a trio, it is not easy to find new things, to make a melody sing, to come up with something moving or illuminating, to place yourself in space, sound and improvisation." Nine years after Follow the White Rabbit, Herman decided to "go back to basics" with this trio album. Songs of the Degrees won’t leave you indifferent. With drummer Ziv Ravitz (who has been by his side on his four previous records) and the Iranian-American double bassist Sam Minaie (Charlie Haden's former student who has worked extensively with Tigran Hamasyan) he has found a rhythmic dream team who understand his compositions perfectly. They are compositions that are reinforced with melodies that you’ll be whistling all day long, the kind that remain imprinted in your brain. What’s more, Yaron Herman displays his flair for the exceptional use of space and silence. It’s in those moments that his playing reaches an organic simplicity that makes Songs of the Degrees one of his most engaging albums yet. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

As the saying goes, good broth may be made in an old pot. Singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, her husband/guitarist Derek Trucks and their old sidekicks go to prove this once again with their music that flows between electric blues, classic rock, country and vintage soul. As worthy heirs of the Allman Brothers (for whom Butch Trucks, Derek’s uncle who died in January 2017, was the original drummer), the Tedeschi Trucks Band turns Signs into a shrine for their Southern rock roots with virtuosic guitars and scalding brass. Recorded at the couple's Swamp Raga studio in Jacksonville, Florida, this fourth album is also a tribute to several of Derek Trucks’ mentors who have recently died: his uncle Butch, guitarist Col. Bruce Hampton and another legendary member of the Allman Brothers, Gregg Allman himself. The celebration remains lively throughout the record and Susan Tedeschi's warm, deep and sensual voice magnifies each composition. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Recorded in July 2018 at “Studio” - a new high-tech venue in the outskirts of Paris - this album (which was built entirely on Judith Fuchs' own idea) is dedicated to orphaned women in 19th century opera, between 1815 and 1850, who were struggling to escape the miserable conditions which they found themselves in. Following her huge success in 2018 in Rossini's Count Ory at the Opéra-Comique de Paris, Julie Fuchs was keen to further explore this repertoire. Conducted by Enrique Mazzola (a real “opera maestro”) the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France is dazzling in these operatic excerpts by Donizetti and Rossini, as well as - and most importantly – those by Pacini, Raimondi, Fioravanti, Berlioz, Barbieri and Meyerbeer. This album presents another opportunity for listeners to be won over by Fuchs’ sumptuous voice. The young French lyrical soprano first made a name for herself at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, before joining the opera ensemble at the Zurich Opera House in 2013. Further successes followed in Salzburg, Vienna and Paris as well as at the Teatro Real in Madrid. This incredibly versatile repertoire jumps from Mozart to Barbara, Cole Porter, George Crumb and Björk. Julie Fuchs knows no musical boundaries, performing with equal ease in opera as she does in concert next to the young pianist Alphonse Cemin. On Mademoiselle she sings in Italian, French and Spanish, journeying through romantic Bel Canto with a wonderfully original touch and revealing all aspects of her agile, sensual voice. © François Hudry/Qobuz

The hyperactive Ariana Grande is back with thank u, next, just seven months after the release of Sweetener. And, most importantly, following the fatal overdose of British rapper Mac Miller, her ex-boyfriend. With this title, following a brief romance with comedian Pete Davidson, Ariana reinforces her image as a strong woman, despite her young age (25 years old) and her career’s past hardships. Pop music caramelised with some R&B, the twelve tracks of this fifth album − produced to perfection by Tommy Brown − forthrightly lift the veil on her former relationships. With her four-octave voice, the mini Mariah Carey, also known as Ari, is walking in the footsteps of Mimi in the 1990s and 2000s, and it shows (NASA)! And for a whiff of soul, she even dares sample Wendy Rene’s soul-crushing After Laughter (“After laughter comes tears”) on fake smile and adds the perfect amount of brass on bloodline. Shattering streaming records, the pop star knows how to surround herself and even co-wrote thank u, next with Victoria Monét. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

With a lively eponymous debut album, Durand Jones & The Indications emerged like a gold nugget discovered in a bayou. Broken hearted, downtrodden and exasperated, the band wrapped Durand Jones’ impressive vocals in late sixties Stax pop. In the ballads, he was so wonderfully sensual that he could’ve melted Mr. Freeze's factory. And in the up-tempo tracks, he landed punches straight to the solar plexus. These elements are still audible on their second album; American Love Call has simply benefited from extra funding and it shows! Durand Jones & The Indications' tracks sparkle the whole way through, with a silkier production that moves the time cursor to the seventies. Fans of the O'Jays, Curtis Mayfield or The Delfonics will enjoy Jones’ perfectly mastered falsetto. In short, the vintage soul revival is alive and well. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

The 18-year-old Paul Weller who recorded the very first Jam single, In the City, in March of 1997 would probably be amused to see himself at age 59 surrounded by a large orchestra in front of a (seated) audience at the Royal Albert Hall one evening in October 2018… The life - or rather lives - of the Modfather merit a certain artistic integrity that this British rock icon has always had. For this wonderfully crafted live album, Weller focused on songs from True Meanings, his beautiful, melancholic soul-folk record released a month before the concert, which he mixes in with other tracks from The Jam (Private Hell, Tales from the Riverbank), Style Council (Have you Ever Had it Blue) and particularly from his other solo albums (Wild Wood, You do Something to Me…). Superbly arranged specifically for the concert, these versions find an organic power thanks to his warmth and sincere rapport with the London audience. This album is specially made live album for fans of the Modfather. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
