What is she doing when she gets home? Is she eating potato chips? Is she taking a bath? Is she paying her bills? Solange never answers any of these questions. The home of “When I Get Home” is much more her native Texas than her beloved New Orleans apartment. When I Get Home is a love letter to Houston. As with each of her previous records, Beyoncé’s sister takes on a mellow tone, melancholic even, which draws more comparisons to Erykah Badu (Texas native as well) than with her older sister. The album features some of the most promising young rappers of the state; Scarface, Devin the Dude, as well as a five guest artists including Pharrell Williams (on Almeda and Sound Of Rain), Raphael Saadiq, Earl Sweatshirt, Panda Bear, Tyler the Creator, Dev Hynes alias Blood Orange, Sampha, Metro Boomin, Playboi Carti, Cassie, Steve Lacy from The Internet and even French piano player Christophe Chassol. The guest artists’ appearances are discrete, and Solange always remains the central force in her songs. The tracks are almost ethereal, she hides her 1970’s funk/jazz sounds under a light electro veil Way To The Show and masters a slow-motion rapped R&B My Skin My Lego with Gucci Mane). Solange Knowles provides a sketch, an avant-garde draft more than an accomplished work of art, a unique 39-minute-long composition that is best to be listen to in one go. The album is a powerful and sensual trip that could very likely end up as one of R&B’s top albums of 2019. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

As pianist Joachim Kühn mentions in the album’s sleeve notes, he gave sixteen concerts with the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman between 1995 and 2000. “Before each concert, Ornette wrote ten new songs, which we would work out and record in his Harmolodic studio in Harlem for a week. Since he wanted me to supply the chords (sounds) for his melodies, I was directly involved in the composition process. After the concert, these pieces were never played again. Now I am the only one who has all the recordings and the sheet music of the 170 pieces. So now, after about twenty years, I have reassembled and recorded them for solo piano. Apart from Lonely Woman, none of these pieces were ever released by Ornette Coleman.” This fascinating collection helped Kühn author a high-class solo album. At 75 years old, he has added some of the free-jazz diktats to his repertoire and is now armed with a rather broad range of shades. He approaches this aptly titled Melodic Ornette Coleman without disrupting the narrative or melodic weave. And because this is Joachim Kühn, the improvisations are anything but plain. In his most melancholic moments, the German pianist still unveils harrowing facets of his musical personality. Superb! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

The 18-year-old Paul Weller who recorded the very first Jam single, In the City, in March of 1997 would probably be amused to see himself at age 59 surrounded by a large orchestra in front of a (seated) audience at the Royal Albert Hall one evening in October 2018… The life - or rather lives - of the Modfather merit a certain artistic integrity that this British rock icon has always had. For this wonderfully crafted live album, Weller focused on songs from True Meanings, his beautiful, melancholic soul-folk record released a month before the concert, which he mixes in with other tracks from The Jam (Private Hell, Tales from the Riverbank), Style Council (Have you Ever Had it Blue) and particularly from his other solo albums (Wild Wood, You do Something to Me…). Superbly arranged specifically for the concert, these versions find an organic power thanks to his warmth and sincere rapport with the London audience. This album is specially made live album for fans of the Modfather. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

As the saying goes, good broth may be made in an old pot. Singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, her husband/guitarist Derek Trucks and their old sidekicks go to prove this once again with their music that flows between electric blues, classic rock, country and vintage soul. As worthy heirs of the Allman Brothers (for whom Butch Trucks, Derek’s uncle who died in January 2017, was the original drummer), the Tedeschi Trucks Band turns Signs into a shrine for their Southern rock roots with virtuosic guitars and scalding brass. Recorded at the couple's Swamp Raga studio in Jacksonville, Florida, this fourth album is also a tribute to several of Derek Trucks’ mentors who have recently died: his uncle Butch, guitarist Col. Bruce Hampton and another legendary member of the Allman Brothers, Gregg Allman himself. The celebration remains lively throughout the record and Susan Tedeschi's warm, deep and sensual voice magnifies each composition. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Recorded in July 2018 at “Studio” - a new high-tech venue in the outskirts of Paris - this album (which was built entirely on Judith Fuchs' own idea) is dedicated to orphaned women in 19th century opera, between 1815 and 1850, who were struggling to escape the miserable conditions which they found themselves in. Following her huge success in 2018 in Rossini's Count Ory at the Opéra-Comique de Paris, Julie Fuchs was keen to further explore this repertoire. Conducted by Enrique Mazzola (a real “opera maestro”) the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France is dazzling in these operatic excerpts by Donizetti and Rossini, as well as - and most importantly – those by Pacini, Raimondi, Fioravanti, Berlioz, Barbieri and Meyerbeer. This album presents another opportunity for listeners to be won over by Fuchs’ sumptuous voice. The young French lyrical soprano first made a name for herself at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, before joining the opera ensemble at the Zurich Opera House in 2013. Further successes followed in Salzburg, Vienna and Paris as well as at the Teatro Real in Madrid. This incredibly versatile repertoire jumps from Mozart to Barbara, Cole Porter, George Crumb and Björk. Julie Fuchs knows no musical boundaries, performing with equal ease in opera as she does in concert next to the young pianist Alphonse Cemin. On Mademoiselle she sings in Italian, French and Spanish, journeying through romantic Bel Canto with a wonderfully original touch and revealing all aspects of her agile, sensual voice. © François Hudry/Qobuz
