The Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi often says “The good teacher is the one that lets you stare out of the window daydreaming sometimes”. Those who have heard him perform alongside fellow musician Enrico Rava, who spotted his talent at the age of 12, or who have ever had the pleasure of listening to his music, will swiftly make the connection between this lovely little saying and his poetic piano playing. On the album Ida Lupino that he recorded for ECM in 2016 with Gianluca Petrella, Louis Sclavis and Gerald Cleaver, Guidi takes us on a beautiful and dreamlike journey and the lightness of his piano is just sublime. Three years later, Giovanni Guidi now leads a new group for his second album with Manfred Sicher’s label, consisting of tenor saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti, guitarist Roberto Cecchetto, double bass player Thomas Morgan and drummer João Lobo. Opening with the title track, Léo Ferré’s most famous song Avec le temps, is straight away a reminder of how popular music has shaped Guidi’s own music. Avec le temps is an album that takes its time; the improvisations are lengthy and the passages of inter-play are intense but a story flows from Guidi’s fingertips and through the keys and this time his four fellow players join him in telling it. This magnificent contemporary jazz opus is concluded with Tomasz, a moving personal tribute to the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko who died in July 2018. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Piano/bass/drums trios are like small islands which are deserted in spirit and highly populated in reality. And jazz pianists can’t help but keep coming back to visit! Some even live there all year round. For Yaron Herman, playing as a trio means "freedom with constraints": make something new out of something old, don't simply copy the big names (Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Ahmad Jamal...), bend the rules by staying within them and, most importantly, have something to say. The Franco-Israeli jazzman is fully aware of the difficulty and ambiguity of the task. "As a trio, it is not easy to find new things, to make a melody sing, to come up with something moving or illuminating, to place yourself in space, sound and improvisation." Nine years after Follow the White Rabbit, Herman decided to "go back to basics" with this trio album. Songs of the Degrees won’t leave you indifferent. With drummer Ziv Ravitz (who has been by his side on his four previous records) and the Iranian-American double bassist Sam Minaie (Charlie Haden's former student who has worked extensively with Tigran Hamasyan) he has found a rhythmic dream team who understand his compositions perfectly. They are compositions that are reinforced with melodies that you’ll be whistling all day long, the kind that remain imprinted in your brain. What’s more, Yaron Herman displays his flair for the exceptional use of space and silence. It’s in those moments that his playing reaches an organic simplicity that makes Songs of the Degrees one of his most engaging albums yet. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Poetic and tremendously sincere, Rosanne Cash honours the traditions of country music that she learned from her illustrious father, the Man in Black. Having won three Grammys with her album The River & The Thread in 2014, Cash makes an eagerly-awaited return, without any nasty surprises. This 15th record called She Remembers Everything highlights a period of change through personal and touching songwriting. Recorded in Portland and New York, John Leventhal and Tucker Martine accompany her on the majority of the tracks, but she also brings in some other outstanding guests. Kris Kristofferson lends his voice on 8 Gods of Harlem and Elvis Costello takes charge of the strings to awaken Cash's warm timbres. Pop-country with acoustic sounds at the forefront, our singer's sublime harmonies and sincerity form a firm connection with the listener from the off. But the real strength of She Remembers Everything lies in the meaningful lyrics. Rosanne Cash's vision here is of a complex and fragile reality. The weight of past generations, painful and nostalgic memories as well as a woman's life in the broadest sense: our artist carries all these thoughts on her shoulders as she delivers irresistible country serenades. This is a profound album that manages to sound like a cry from across the centuries and yet still have a brilliantly modern feel. © Clara Bismuth/Qobuz

Bringing together pianist Brad Mehldau, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, double bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade isn’t an easy thing to do. But Wolfgang Muthspiel succeeded in 2016 on his album Rising Grace. A worthy heir to Mick Goodrick and Pat Metheny, the Austrian guitarist was wise enough to think of his album as a unified quintet rather than a fleeting all-star album. The style of jazz used in Rising Grace, which is demanding both in its form and its technique, is once again at the heart of Where The River Goes. This new album includes the same names but with Eric Harland on drums, replacing Blade. Muthspiel’s group is impressive: the lyricism is as fine as ever, the cohesion is perfect and the phrasing of the solos is precise. On top of all this the guitarist composes for the rest of the gang too. He gives them freedom and never tries to be the gang leader… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
