As pianist Joachim Kühn mentions in the album’s sleeve notes, he gave sixteen concerts with the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman between 1995 and 2000. “Before each concert, Ornette wrote ten new songs, which we would work out and record in his Harmolodic studio in Harlem for a week. Since he wanted me to supply the chords (sounds) for his melodies, I was directly involved in the composition process. After the concert, these pieces were never played again. Now I am the only one who has all the recordings and the sheet music of the 170 pieces. So now, after about twenty years, I have reassembled and recorded them for solo piano. Apart from Lonely Woman, none of these pieces were ever released by Ornette Coleman.” This fascinating collection helped Kühn author a high-class solo album. At 75 years old, he has added some of the free-jazz diktats to his repertoire and is now armed with a rather broad range of shades. He approaches this aptly titled Melodic Ornette Coleman without disrupting the narrative or melodic weave. And because this is Joachim Kühn, the improvisations are anything but plain. In his most melancholic moments, the German pianist still unveils harrowing facets of his musical personality. Superb! © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

In this fascinating recording the legendary Neeme Järvi explores two lesser-known French ballets by Sauguet and Ibert, complemented by the Ballet Suite from Massenet’s opera Hérodiade. Sauguet studied composition with Canteloube and Koechlin. He wrote in a variety of genres, notably for radio and for film, but his ballet scores – more than twenty of them – were central to his output. Les Forains (‘The Showfolk’) was first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in March 1945. The cast was led by the work’s brilliant young choreographer, Roland Petit, and conducted by André Cluytens. Sauget’s wide-ranging influences, notably the orchestration of Richard Strauss as well as the works of Satie and les Six, give his work a flowing, openly melodic style that is immediately appealing and full of wit and charm. Following the success of Les Forains, and the formal establishment in October 1945 of Les Ballets des Champs-Élysées, Roland Petit and Boris Kochno devised a number of new ballets for the company. One of these was Ibert’s Les Amours de Jupiter, premiered on 9 March 1946 with a cast led by Petit himself as Jupiter. © Chandos

In 1634, an important collection of folk stories and legends appeared in Naples: the Pentamerone or Lo cunto de li cunti (meaning “The Tale of Tales”), collected by Giambattista Basile. For the very first time in history, these myths, sayings, legends and narratives (which until then had only been transmitted orally) were recorded on paper. The publisher was no doubt addressing an informed public - one that could grasp the moral and ethical principles, the ambiguities and metaphors that were hidden in what might appear as simple entertainment. The book is composed of fifty fairy tales that are recounted by ten different storytellers over the course of five days in Neapolitan dialect - hence the name “Pentamerone”, meaning “five days”. Many of these tales would resurface much later, with the likes of Perrault and Grimm, who wrote the preface to the first German translation of the “Pentamerone” two centuries later... Of course, the collection doesn’t include a single musical note – they’re fairy tales after all. The Oni Wytars Ensemble have set about gathering popular songs from that period or earlier, as well as villanelles, tarantellas and canzones by well-known composers such as Baldassare Donato or Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger. They stick to the inherent rhythms of prosody and the result is all the more convincing as everything seems to have come straight from the depths of time, with their lively voices and mischievous instrumentations. A wonderful record. © SM/Qobuz

A few months after the release of his autobiography Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen took to the stage of the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York for a number of stunning concerts. The Boss performs tracks from his extensive music career acoustically on guitar and piano, intertwining his compositions with personal anecdotes. The result is this intense and unfiltered live performance, including the stripped-back and powerful versions of tracks from his albums Greetings from Asbury Park, Born in the U.S.A., Nebraska, Tracks, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Tunnel of Love, Magic, The Rising and Wrecking Ball … It was through these albums that the New Jersey kid became an icon, both musically and ideologically. Following in the footsteps of his idol Bob Dylan, Springsteen remains one of the most remarkable representatives of America’s powerless, providing poignant snapshots into the harsh reality of the crumpled starred flag and the supposed American Dream. The stripped-back versions of his hits Thunder Road, The Promised Land, Born in the U.S.A., Dancing in the Dark, Land of Hope and Dreams and of course Born to Run give a new perspective to a repertoire that we know so very well but never grow tired of. There’s a reason why he’s called the Boss… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
