While some artists are catapulted to the height of fame before falling to the bottom of the charts, Bonobo is one of those artists who progresses slowly but surely. Simon Green's popularity has been gradually increasing since his debut album on Tru Thoughts in 2000. His switch to Ninja Tunes marked a milestone in the indie electro scene, and his best-selling album in 2010 built a fanbase that every festival programmer could depend on. His last album - Migration (2017) - made him even more bankable by winning him a Grammy nomination. Needless to say, Fabric’s decision to entrust Bonobo with the first volume of Fabric presents is a bold statement. It marks the beginning of the London club’s new compilation series, taking over from the legendary Fabric and Fabriclive series which ended in 2018. By handing the reins over to an artist who’s not a regular at the club, the twenty-year-old institution is showing that they’re still looking to broaden their musical horizons. And even if Simon Green is more of a “concert performer” than a DJ, he is undoubtedly a brilliant connoisseur of electronic music, which he demonstrates here with a selection of current tracks, most of them coming from 2018. Bonobo has picked out artists such as Poté, a rising star in London's scene of electronic fusion with his driving percussion on Jacquot (Waters of Praslin), as well as the superb track Femenine by Olsen, a newcomer who signed his debut album last year on the New York label Mister Saturday Night. The mix is largely dominated by melodic house (the perfect accompaniment to a road trip along the coast) notably with Laurent Garnier’s brilliant remix of Rone's Mirapolis, and Flicker by Bonobo himself, who also drops the previously unreleased Ibrik, a mellow track that fuses breakbeat with Middle Eastern melodies. Resolutely modern, the Brit still plays some antique tracks, such as John Beltran's Collage Of Dreams (taken from his indispensable album Ten Days of Blue released in 1996 on Peacefrog) and Nia, one of the first tracks by the German duo Âme, taken from their 2nd EP, released in 2004 on Sonar Kollektiv. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary are going back to their roots! After the long hiatus of Moderat (their collaboration with fellow Berliner Sascha Ring a.k.a. Apparat, which led to four albums and worldwide tours), Modeselektor have returned to the studio. Who Else is a compact and efficient album with only 8 tracks and is intense from start to finish. Well, almost. That’s if you don’t include the last track Wake Me Up When It’s Over, which sounds very… Moderat. Fans of Modeselektor from the Hello Mom! and Happy Birthday! period (when the duo mixed rapped verses with hard-hitting beats) will get their money's worth. After the hypnotic instrumental intro composed with the Italian producer Lorenzo Senni from Warp Records, Modeselektor invites a few guests onto the mic: Flohio (the new London rap sensation) is a notable stand-out on the club banger Wealth, while Tommy Ca$h (an Estonian DJ discovered online) signs the anthem of the album – Who - with his “bla-bla-blahs” punctuating the warehouse rave atmosphere. The Berliners stay on course with the gabber track Prügelknabe and the acid techno track I Am Your God, which features the voice of the brilliant Floridian Otto Von Schirach who previously worked with the duo on Evil Twin in 2011. A real array of brain-battering, pulse-raising sounds: this is Modeselektor at their best. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
