The eighth album for the Followill brothers and their cousin Matthew, coming four years after Walls, which did not in fact mean “walls” but stood for “We Are Like Love Songs” (you're either a romantic or you aren't). This time, the release is called When You See Yourself, and as the title suggests, it may be about taking a step back and looking at the path one has travelled. Many rock critics will be tempted, therefore, to call this “a mature work”. Indeed, it is a long time since the lads were throwing themselves around the stage like mad dogs, on the verge of the 2000s, back in Nashville, Tennessee. The future was blazing, rock was picking back up again... But twenty years on? Eleven tracks that are darker than usual, illuminated here and there with a look at the beauty of time as it passes, and its burden as well. Weariness, sorrows and joys scattered along the way... It all starts from the first track, referring to the title of the album, When You See Yourself, Are You Far Away, and it is immediately a question of time running away, day and night. Caleb, the singer, gave free rein to inspiration while recording the song, and improvised almost all the lyrics, and asking the question: “One more night, will you stay here? ”. The voices are tired: the world of the Kings of Leon has no more room for illusions. The group's other thinker, Jared Followill, recently said As for myself, I have to get used to getting old... I don't like how I look. I hate seeing myself in photographs... I'm working on my mysterious side, that's also why our pictures are often a little blurry...” The Bandit100,000 PeopleStormy Weather, the tracks follow on in a coherent series. The darkness doesn't obscure a few rays of light that play along the basslines... After the rather clement A Wave, the sky darkens on Golden Restless AgeTime in Disguise and Supermarket (“I’m going nowhere…”).  It's a sadness that, surprisingly, often recalls Turn On The Bright Lights  by Interpol. Kings of Leon have chosen to team up with the previous effort's producer, Markus Dravs, who has worked on quite a few successes in the genre, from Arcade Fire to Coldplay by way of Mumford & Sons, and on the mixer, another giant: Mark “Spike” Stent, a constant presence for 25 years, from Madonna to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran... in short, the Kings Of Leon are in good hands and have released a beautiful album. © Yan Céh/Qobuz

Nordic Jazz in 10 Albums

Snowy scenes, big expanses, beautiful nature everywhere… Scandinavia is often described by the same old clichés. Jazz is no exception. We tend to talk about Scandi jazz like it’s one big genre. However, each country has its own distinct style; Denmark’s scene rivals traditional North American jazz, Norway tends to get experimental and Sweden treads the line between the two. Nordic musicians have been adding their own unique touch to the genre since the 70s and the younger generation continue to sculpt its future. Here, we zoom in on Scandinavian jazz in 10 albums, offering a glimpse into a discography that’s as wide as a fjord.

And then Nirvana Killed Rock

Thirty-four years ago, Nirvana was born: the most unexpected punk swerve of the end of the 20th century. A rocketing career, international hits, hordes of fans and a tragic epilogue for this worldwide phenomenon. And what if Kurt Cobain’s band was none other than the last band in the history of rock? The ultimate generational phenomenon of genre, if not its last myth.

Norah Jones in 10 Songs

Even though her albums are released on jazz label Blue Note, Norah Jones’s music has never simply been jazz, just as it has never solely been pop, nor folk, country or soul… Since the early noughties, the American singer and pianist has embraced many styles, often breaking norms in pursuit of her own unique sound, a sound she loves to share through collaborations with different musicians of diverse origin and style. Discover the world of Norah Jones in 10 songs.
