The eighth album for the Followill brothers and their cousin Matthew, coming four years after Walls, which did not in fact mean “walls” but stood for “We Are Like Love Songs” (you're either a romantic or you aren't). This time, the release is called When You See Yourself, and as the title suggests, it may be about taking a step back and looking at the path one has travelled. Many rock critics will be tempted, therefore, to call this “a mature work”. Indeed, it is a long time since the lads were throwing themselves around the stage like mad dogs, on the verge of the 2000s, back in Nashville, Tennessee. The future was blazing, rock was picking back up again... But twenty years on? Eleven tracks that are darker than usual, illuminated here and there with a look at the beauty of time as it passes, and its burden as well. Weariness, sorrows and joys scattered along the way... It all starts from the first track, referring to the title of the album, When You See Yourself, Are You Far Away, and it is immediately a question of time running away, day and night. Caleb, the singer, gave free rein to inspiration while recording the song, and improvised almost all the lyrics, and asking the question: “One more night, will you stay here? ”. The voices are tired: the world of the Kings of Leon has no more room for illusions. The group's other thinker, Jared Followill, recently said “As for myself, I have to get used to getting old... I don't like how I look. I hate seeing myself in photographs... I'm working on my mysterious side, that's also why our pictures are often a little blurry...” The Bandit, 100,000 People, Stormy Weather, the tracks follow on in a coherent series. The darkness doesn't obscure a few rays of light that play along the basslines... After the rather clement A Wave, the sky darkens on Golden Restless Age, Time in Disguise and Supermarket (“I’m going nowhere…”). It's a sadness that, surprisingly, often recalls Turn On The Bright Lights by Interpol. Kings of Leon have chosen to team up with the previous effort's producer, Markus Dravs, who has worked on quite a few successes in the genre, from Arcade Fire to Coldplay by way of Mumford & Sons, and on the mixer, another giant: Mark “Spike” Stent, a constant presence for 25 years, from Madonna to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bruce Springsteen to Ed Sheeran... in short, the Kings Of Leon are in good hands and have released a beautiful album. © Yan Céh/Qobuz
