To complete Weezer’s discography, which began when Grunge was slowly declining, frontman Rivers Cuomo chose the color black. After the release in early January 2019 of the Teal Album, which was ten covers chosen over the span of 40 years of music history and ranging from Happy Together by the Turtles to No Scrubs by TLC, one could wonder if Cuomo was claiming his rights to enter the pantheon of smash hits. If the record is a little far from Island in the Sun's powerful presence, this album is full of Weezer’s signature bubblegum pop. It’s true that the band’s experiments with Pro Tools and a more mainstream bent on Pacific Dream (2017) left some fans on the side of the road. On The Black Album they returned with a lighter pop sound, well produced, and less pompous. While Weezer is still staying true to working on its formula and even if we are confronted by the layered choruses of Piece of Cake, the obscure lyrics of Can't Knock the Hustle or the cute melodies of I'm Just Being Honest, the albums still works incredibly well. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

Neoclassicism: The New World Between Classical Music and Electro

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.

Daniel Johnston, A Troubling, Troubled Icon

No one ever sounded like Daniel Johnston. The little known depressive artist found fame thanks to his peers’ recognition. He passed away on September 11th, 2019, at the age of 58; his discography has slowly become the symbol of naïve, lo-fi and hyper-emotional music. It’s never too late to (re)discover this bona fide underground genius, and his heartfelt, authentic music.

New Order: From Darkness to Dance-floor

How does one Mancunian group move from perhaps the gloomiest band of the punk era to a master of the dance-floor? In the early eighties, straight out of Joy Division’s ashes, New Order marked one of the first successful unions of rock’n’roll and dance music. A perfect soundtrack for a morose, Thatcherite England.
