"Fight Song" made Rachel Platten's career but its omnipresence in 2016 -- it was everywhere, playing starring roles in ads for Ford and Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign -- put the singer/songwriter in an inspirational box. Platten attempts to break out of such well-meaning constrictions on Waves, a glitzy, stylized attempt to please every conceivable modern pop audience. While "Fight Song" echoes through Waves -- it's heard within the theme of the aspirational anthem "Broken Glass" and in the melody of "Loose Ends" -- Platten is intent on proving that she's not just a winsome singer/songwriter. She'll deliver a stately ballad when she needs to -- the austere "Hands" and the solemn closer "Grace" -- but spends more time ratcheting up EDM rhythms and sliding into neon-streaked club tunes. The emphasis on the latter -- the album opens up with the de facto Madonna tribute "Perfect for You" and peaks with "Shivers," a dead ringer for Ellie Goulding -- winds up illustrating how Platten is a malleable vocal presence, adaptable to many different styles without quite imprinting the sounds with her own personality. That's not really a detriment, as such producers as Ryan Tedder and Stargate put her inherent flexibility to good use. Everybody involved is determined to give the album a steely, professional sheen and they succeed, turning Waves into a record that provides a definitive break from "Fight Song."

The Pioneers of Rock’n’Roll

Rock’n’roll isn’t dead. But you can count the pioneers of the genre who are still alive on two fingers: Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson. They’re 84 and 82. Lewis was a wild rocker signed with Sun Records who made history by igniting his instrument and transforming church music, country and boogie-woogie into wicked rock'n'roll. Jackson was a country singer who had a brilliant career alongside Elvis. Going from Little Richard to Chuck Berry, not forgetting Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and Hank Williams, Qobuz pays tribute to the precursors of rock.

Neoclassicism: The New World Between Classical Music and Electro

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama... In recent years, these popular names have all been grouped under the vast and imprecise label "neoclassical". In truth, this "scene" looks more like a motley crew of curious artists who mix classical instruments with electronic production. Drawing influence from American minimalism, these musicians tantalise the senses and expand horizons on both sides of the musical spectrum.

Lhasa, An Unforgettable Shooting Star

With only three studio albums, one live album and three international tours, Lhasa de Sela left a unique mark in the history of modern popular music. “La Llorona”, “The Living Road” and “Lhasa” are distinct and accomplished works, revealing a strange yet familiar world, halfway between dreams and reality. Her light/dark songs carry the genuine emotions of an artist whose sensitive singing offers a pact of intimate complicity with the listener. Lhasa de Sela’s life contains all the ingredients for a legend, all the steps of a novel, all the emotions of a beautiful and overwhelming story.
