War on her mind? Whatever Beth Hart’s mind-set was in Autumn 2019, the Californian tigress has long shown her feisty side without ever getting caught up in the clichés. With the album War in My Mind, she adds the finishing garnish to her classic rock’n'blues’n’soul cocktail by looking inwards and confronting her inner demons. “More than any record I’ve ever made, on 2019’s War In My Mind I’m more open to being myself on these songs”, she explains. “I’ve come a long way with healing, and I’m comfortable with my darknesses, weirdnesses and things that I’m ashamed on – as well as all the things that make me feel good.” On songs such as Bad Woman BluesLet It Grow and Woman Down, Hart pours her heart out – without being overly gushy - and uses her voice as an irresistible magnet that pulls every word, every sentence, every chorus. The cherry on the cake is that we find Rob Cavallo behind the console, crafting a slick yet never rushed production. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz

The British Blues Boom, Chronicle of a Revolution

If Joe Bonamassa has come back with British Blues Explosion, a year after the Rolling Stones’ Blue And Lonesome, it has cemented the fact that the British Blues Boom was more than just a trend. More than a simple musical trend, it was the interest of a younger generation for the great American blues idols that had been ignored in their country, which led to a real revolution, with three major agitators leading the charge, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, considered in the UK as the “Holy Trinity” of rock and guitar. If they were far from being the only musicians involved, it is through their respective careers that we have discovered that blues, far from being an outdated musical genre, is some kind of getaway to other musical areas and has allowed for endless innovations.

The Black Keys in 10 Songs

From 2001, The Black Keys have been reminding the world about the real roots of the Blues, cutting away all the frills and unnecessary solos. Their music has always been untamed, abrupt and minimalist. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney developed this unique style over the course of two decades, without once selling their souls to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads. Here are ten songs to prove it.

Dixiefrog: 35 Years of the Blues Label in 10 Albums

The Dixiefrog label was founded in Paris in 1986 by lovers of American country, folk and blues. Thirty-five years later, the label keeps on keepin’ on, with its impressive catalogue (about 450 releases) and passion intact. Dixiefrog specialises in the blues, with a largely American and French roster of loyal artists and open artistic horizons. It’s impossible to capture all the interesting Dixiefrog albums here, but these 10 are absolutely essential.
