Door de sonische verkenningen van Meddle tot daadwerkelijke nummers om te smeden, en hun tripachtige instrumentale gedeeltes een zwoele, brandschone productie te geven ontwierp Pink Floyd ongewild zijn commerciële doorbraak met Dark Side of the Moon. Roger Waters schreef een reeks nummers over saaie, alledaagse details die op zichzelf niet zo indrukwekkend zijn, maar tegen de achtergrond van Floyds langzame, atmosferische geluidscollages en zorgvuldig geplaatste geluidseffecten hebben ze het beoogde emotionele effect.
