The Sommernachtskonzert or Summer Nigh Concert held by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the elegant grounds of the Belvedere Castle was developed as a warm-weather counterpart to the orchestra's New Year's Eve concerts. But as the summer version has developed, it has diverged slightly from the original event. There's still a rotating cast of star conductors and singers, and there are still Viennese march and waltz favorites as encores. But the main body of the program is a bit more varied, a bit more left up to the individual conductor. For 2018 that conductor was Valery Gergiev, and true to his specialty he favored mostly operatic music. The results in the familiar overtures and instrumental segments are indeed distinctive, and the album will definitely please fans of the series even if it's not the usual Central European fare that's highlighted. Sample the Montagues and Capulets number from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suite No. 2: few conductors can give that the slightly breathless strutting quality that Gergiev brings. On vocals you get his protégée Anna Netrebko, taking arias by Cilea, Puccini, and Leoncavallo that fit right into her creamy comfort zone, and the vocal selections extend into the encores. Only there do you get Viennese repertory by Julius Fucik -- not the Entry of the Gladiators beloved of American merry-go-round riders but the equally attractive Florentiner Marsch, Op. 214, and, finally, Strauss II's Wiener Blut. Best of all is the sound: Sony's engineers have improved each year, and by now their way with the outdoor sound environment here is exceptional. Just hope there isn't a thunderstorm next year; if there is, you can go back and listen profitably to this album for a repeated hearing.
