Some Nights voert de ambitie en sonische bombast op het debuutalbum Aim and Ignite (2009), van Fun op. Tegelijkertijd slaagt het er ook in om nog krachtiger en indrukwekkender te zijn. Alhoewel er een grotere hiphop-invloed te bespeuren is op dit album vloeien er nog steeds grote doses Queen en ELO door de aderen van de band. Dit hoor je zowel in de machine-gemaakte zangharmonieën als in de ornamentale grootsheid van hun geluid. Strijkers, blazers, back-up zang, keyboards en voorgeprogrammeerde drums omringen leadzanger Nate Ruess als een lawaaierig publiek, maar zijn oprechte stem en pijnlijk eerlijke teksten verdrinken nooit in het kabaal. Ruess geeft een heel menselijke kern aan het geheel waardoor het gegrond blijft, terwijl de muziek naar overdadige crescendo’s toewerkt. Het is een indrukwekkende prestatie. Some Nights verdient dan ook alle lof die het toekomt.
